RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Yes. And then when you miss one question it's programmed to put you through about 20 minutes of review.

I was talking to a sixth grader recently and she was complaining that one of her teachers would only accept multiple choice answers but she prefers essay style answers so she can express what she knows without confinement (my words but that's what she was getting at). She was also talking about how they have to finish this and that or do it online during the summer. When I told her I passed everybody and let my students redesign any assessment to essay or just talking to me about it or even simply not doing it or doing something else entirely she couldn't believe it. She was like can you do that? I told her I'm the teacher and the grades are at my discretion and there's nothing in my contract that says I have to justify the grades a give by any certain criteria. I'm not sure what my point is but if everything wasn't so rigid I probably wouldn't go so far out on a limb to be freewheeling about it. Other teachers talk about teaching "accountability". How about teaching them you don't HAVE to wield power over people just because you can? Of course, almost everything I try to do is a cacophonous disaster. But this is public school, it's nothing but disaster. For some of them they might see that at least I'm trying to provide them with a different sort of disaster.

Analogist, in another thread you mentioned that trying to implement the philosophy of Holt in my classroom was just weird and not good for anybody. I felt like that was an insightful and powerful characterization. I know there's truth in that but it's not lost on all my students that what I'm really doing is trying to say hey there's got to be some other way. So they're stuck in my failing experiment? I still get students who say very positive things about the experience. It's not nearly as different as I would want it to be but it's as different as I can make it. At least it's not the exact same format as every other teacher they have.

And Angry B wouldn't have to make up my class on a computer even if he chose to ignore me or even be hostile.

The power structure sucks. I know I'm a part of it but I've been paying my rent and I really am a change of pace to the degree I can be.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.
