RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

What was your sex-ed experience?

At my school they treated it like a fucking third world war. I mean, letters were send out home and parents had to agree that their kids be taught about sex. What the fuck? Is it just me, or is that an over-reaction. And thank God every parent signed it or some kids would be up for a rough time in adult-hood. Anyway, so it was this big deal, the kids spoke about it in hushed whispers -- we all knew what sex was, and the teachers looked gloomy as hell. You could have assumed they were all about to tell us we were adopted. Jesus Christ, is it just me, or did they just make a big deal out of nothing. All the kids knew what sex was, for fucks sake, and there's nothing wrong with it. So, anyhow, the day comes and one kid asks if todays sex-ed. The whole class freezes, acts as if that kids just told the teacher go suck a mammoth's dick. The teacher told us 'yes', and not to talk about it until it's time. Then, after lunch, we all lined up and were escorted to another room where the other half the our year-group were waiting.

We sat down, and this teacher that was teaching it, a man, thankfully, said that we are not allowed to laugh or snicker during the video he was about to show. So, he said it was to get the laughs out of our system, and started yelling "SEX!" from out the top of his lungs, and he screamed: "IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT A VAGINA IS, DON'T WORRY: YOU'RE GONNA GET INTO IT. HAHAHA!" I shit you not, that's what happened. Everybody exploded laughing; I laughed too, but I was afraid of the teacher, he seemed like a maniac.

And then we saw this corny video about how girls get pregtant and all, and about how hormones effect us at this age. Then the lunatic teacher got up and started talking about how sacred sex is and how we shouldn't fuck around, and all. But the most offensive thing, I think, is that they never mentioned condoms or safe sex. No one on this fucking earth is only going to have sex to have babies, and they fucking knew that. Yet they never mentioned safe sex, STDs, and the important shit. It was a fucking overview of erections, hormones and pregnancies. Nothing too important. It was a horrible system. They sugarcoated all of it, treated us like idiots, babies. How bad was your sex-ed class?

Note the word "only". Now, I don't know if it's true, but a lot of people do it for fun, and the school I went to obviously wanted to draw attention away from that fact.

RE: What was your sex-ed experience?

I barely remember sexual education. Like, barely.

All I remember is that we talked about penis, vagina, and those things. To be honest sex ed could be done a lot better.

Is Ireland really that socially conservative?

What was your sex-ed experience?

All I remember is that we randomly yelled out "PENIS" and "VAGINA" just for the heck of it (our teacher initiated it). xD

Then we were giving these family homework assignments... -_- We basically had to talk about sex with our family for a grade.. Most of us just had our parents sign it and did the rest alone.

The class would've been better without that awkward shit. ._.

What was your sex-ed experience?

You had to TALK to your PARENTS. That's just plain fucked up. No one on planet earth would want that. And, yeah, we, too, would have been better off without the shit we went through.

What was your sex-ed experience?

Wow I cannot imagine talking to my parents about sex.

Then again it probably would've helped because my sexuality became fucked up for a period.

My dad wouldn't even teach me how to shave, discussing anything of the sort was entirely off the table

Maybe that's why I have these odd fetishes :s

RE: What was your sex-ed experience?

So, my kids are all under 4. pretty much the hope is that I can get my kids married young. As their secondary teacher (mother is primary) we're going to have to be the ones to teach our kids, because I doubt any of our kids will want to go to school.

So that's gonna be fun, but I really don't have any qualms about it and I hope they don't. Things is, I really wish I was taught ANYTHING before I was married, and my wife resents how little she knew too.

We don't believe in fucking around, we believe in making it official and putting long term commitment up-front (marriage), then go ahead and get as pregnant or not-pregnant as you want.

People who have never had a good chance to explore who they are have a really hard time with serious relationships. Our marriage was pretty messed up for awhile, but our short time before diving in was enough to know we were meant for each other. six years, a hell of a lot of trouble and four kids later, it seems like we've figured it out. It would have been nice to figure out sooner or have our parents actually act like parents about this sort of thing.

when you displace the roles of parents partially or completely by school, you cut the responsibility of parents greatly and frequently their authority unless they bother to be involved with their kids. sex is a very important part of life and it just seems like such bullshit to leave it to the school which screws every other subject up so badly...

btw, sex is easy to figure out, being open to figuring it out requires letting go of certain inhibitions, especially if its just a taboo. the relationship outside of the sex is much harder.

What was your sex-ed experience?

We had a lesson in 10th grade science only about the biology of male and female reproductive systems.
And in 9th all the girls were given a lecture about pads, periods, etc. Note that most people start menstruating in 6th or 7th.

That's fucking it, from the school perspective.

RE: What was your sex-ed experience?

btw, i'm pretty sure most prudishness from "Islamic" cultures is because of British influence.

This is on four fronts:

(1) Ibn Umar had a reputation amongst the companions of the Prophet (saws) that he was really a person who didn't indulge much in worldly pleasures. ALL the companions were like this, so to have that reputation says a lot. During Ramadan he wouldn't actually break his fast by eating, he would break his fast by getting it on with his wife.

(2) Aisha' (ra) according to one of my teachers said that had the prohibition of adultery and fornication come at an earlier time than it did, many of the companions would have had doubts about this whole Islam thing.

(3) I've heard this list recited by one of my teachers. There are three things, the first of which will harm your spiritual development, the second will help it, and the third will depend on the person. food, sex, and money

(4) The Prophet (saws) told his companions that they are rewarded with good deeds when they have sex with their wives. The reason for this was interesting, He (saws) said to the effect that if you did not do it in a lawful way you would have done it in an unlawful way. So basically, you gotta get it, so do it right and Allah will reward you.
