RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Rofl

Step 1: Don't use Microsoft products.

For anything even remotely critical. A system being able to be infected just by clicking a link is unacceptable no matter how you look at it. This is far from the first time that has happened, so Microsoft has had plenty of time to demonstrate responsibility.

Not to mention for whatever reason, people still can't internet properly.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the infected were older people.

RE: Ransomware cyber-attack a wake-up call, Microsoft warns

Uhm, same happened to my brother years ago. School Survival is the last community you'd expect to make ageist comments.
We're not talking about trojans here. We're talking about instant code execution exploits.

Meanwhile Chrome OS and Ubuntu are just sitting there eternally awaiting their mass adoption. Microsoft has more business strategists and lobbyists than programmers.

True that. Though I think a lot of older people (unfortunately) tend to get scammed when it comes to shit like fake software (MacKeeper comes to mind, then the infamous Indian "technician" scam)

Please do not use Apple products either, since they are expensive, and very hard to modify.

There's also always ReactOS, which is a free open-source clone of Windows, especially Windows 95 and Windows Server 2003. It's been in development There are countless operating systems that are obscure, and they are worth trying. ReactOS has been in development since 1998, and you can help contribute to ReactOS's development. There's also an free open-source clone of DOS, such as AppleDOS, AmigaDOS, and MS-DOS as well, called FreeDOS. FreeDOS has also been in development since 1998, and it's still being worked on, and of course, you can contribute to FreeDOS's development.

ReactOS would be more widely known if only more people contributed to ReactOS's development and people spoke more about ReactOS.

Have you USED ReactOS? How is a research-project-OS relevant to this subject?

Yes, I've used ReactOS on VirtualBox, although ReactOS I heard works much better outside of VirtualBox.

VirtualBox isn't real usage. Sorry for being rude, but, please don't go around recommending alpha-phase stuff to random people. Calling ReactOS a serious replacement for Windows in the current state is preposterous.

Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint are far more serious alternatives to Windows, currently than ReactOS is. Even FreeDOS is a more serious alternative to Windows than ReactOS.

I think I understand it now, it was a generic comment while I interpreted it in the context of the thread. Sorry Daryl!
