RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

What are the Conditions of your School?

What are the conditions of your school?

For me the conditions of my school are that the floors, the walls, and the uncomfortable chairs are covered in mold, sediment, and purple glitter. The canteen has disgusting tables and these blue things that they call "chairs". Puke

I HATE my school. I'd rather die than go to school for another 6 years.Fu

I actually went back to my high school to pick up my diploma and transcripts; yeah it still looked like the shithole as it was back then. Though it's your generic American high school shithole.

What are the Conditions of your School?

While my school looks good, superficially, the lights break down every month, the floor is dirty as fuck, and the rooms smell like shit. Honestly, it smells like someone took a shit in every room. Also, in my school, the roof is slanted and in half the classes the only windows are just these small squares in the ceiling that do fuck all in terms of light. But it has a nice little pond in the center of it. Problem is, the pond is surrounded by four walls, it's just there to look at. I don't know how the fuck you get down to it because there no doors. I think you have to get up on the roof and bring a ladder. They ran out off space... I guess.

Oh shit. Your school seems to be about as poorly maintained as mine. The air coming out of the vents smells so bad that makes me want to put a cloth over my face.

RE: What are the Conditions of your School?

Half the toilets in the bathrooms at my school are clogged with a metric shiton of paper. And some guy wanted to go so bad he took a shit in he pile of paper clogging the pipes. The thing was nearly coming out of the bowl. And also someone likes pissing on floors. Not to mention my creepy principal usually walks into the boy's toilets to tell them the bell went and they shouls get to class. He just stands watching them piss and telling them to get their asses to class. Then he goes about opening the stalls to check if someones in there.

Yeah. Those bathrooms are a nightmare. The other thing was that I've heard from some people that sewage was coming out of the floor drains. I thought that might be the reason why several bathrooms were closed.

What are the Conditions of your School?

Interesting question, and I'd be interested to do a broader survey of school conditions like cleanliness, lighting, architecture and design.

Although a specific school's physical conditions arguably a fraction of the overall problems with school -- and even a glittery, brand-new, squeaky-clean conventional school can be similar to prison -- having a dirty, uncomfortable, poorly-designed and poorly-lit school can slide it all even more into dystopia and misery.

I have long recalled my elementary school as being incredibly dark, especially in the hallways. I think it probably was as I remember it, since I've been in other buildings since that are very dark in the corridors and I have a similar feeling as I did then. I suppose less lighting saves money on the electricity bill, at least back when there weren't such things as LED lighting and when schools are still using lighting from decades past.

Actually, school cleanliness and lighting is something that could be worth bringing up to your school board if you're in an American public school. The school board likely has the power to take actions to improve these kinds of conditions, and they are a simpler problem to solve than kinds of problems with forced attendance, curriculum, graduation requirements, etc. that tend to be imposed at the state level.

Also, if anyone can document these kinds of conditions with photography, video, etc. there's the potential to go to the press and/or post them online as a way to get public attention (and at least to raise awareness of the problems.) Even if photography and filming are banned in your school, it could be possible to get permission to do so.

Overall, I think that change requires publicizing the various problems with school. This has done a lot to bring about social change on other issues in the past.

For example, Upton Sinclair's book The Jungle from over a century ago led to a lot of changes:

Sinclair wrote the novel to portray the harsh conditions and exploited lives of immigrants in the United States in Chicago and similar industrialized cities.[2] However, most readers were more concerned with his exposure of health violations and unsanitary practices in the American meatpacking industry during the early 20th century, greatly contributing to a public outcry which led to reforms including the Meat Inspection Act. Sinclair famously said of the public reaction "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."

In short, maybe it's things like dreadful school conditions that could appeal the public's (and parents') sense of disgust and their first steps to questioning things, compared to problems like one-size-fits-all coverage of narrow and outdated curriculum, forced work to achieve grades for no pay, forced attendance regardless of learning, and the like.

Yeah. I think that I could do that. The other problem is overcrowding in places like the canteen. But yeah I'll keep that in mind.

Yeah, in my school, the canteen is usually swarming with people. Half the people in there are standing up because the seats are full, and the other half of the school is in the locker area or outside. So yeah, our canteen is a joke.

At my school, you are forced to sit in a seat. They are so horrible that they don't deserve the name "Seats".

Also, one of the teachers said that because people were clogging drains, sewage was coming up out of the floor drains. It explains why so many bathrooms closed.

We only have two bathrooms; one for men and one for women. Thankfully, the men's restroom is near my locker area so, unlike the women, I don't have to go to the other side of the school for a piss.

What are the Conditions of your School?

One time, when the vice-principal was standing in the bathroom telling people to get the fuck out to class(the vice-principal is a creepy pervert who does that, too), someone forgot to lock their door and he just opened it, and while the guy was taking a piss, the vice-principal stood in the door-way telling him to hurry up because the bell just went.
