RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Yet Assad apologists insist the rebels/terrorists are the ones throwing around complex chemicals(Mustard and Chlorine are relatively easy to make and handle. Sarin gas is substantially more difficult to make and handle, way beyond the capabilities of ISIS and the rebels. Even that Japanese terrorist organization couldn't make Sarin that worked very well. Their batch was highly impure and thus not very effective, though tossing it in a subway did nab some kills)

Some Assad apologists insist he protects Christians, even though one of Syria's goals for a long time was to annex Lebanon and basically give the finger to the Christian population there.

The UN has known that rebels (Al-Nusra/Jabhat Fateh al-Sham in particular) have sarin for years. While I'm not gonna try and justify the occupation of Lebanon, it's a gross oversimplification to say that their intention was to "annex Lebanon and give the finger to the Christian population," particularly when it was the Maronite government that invited them in the first place (which is not to say that the occupation wasn't bad for the Christian population in many ways).

At any rate Assad has upwards of 70% support in Syria and it's not our place to decide who leads the country over the actual people there Smile

The whole Syrian invasion/occupation/whatever was kind of a shitshow and tbh at that point I wasn't really bothered to elaborate on it. Actually the Lebanon War is the perfect example of a powder keg, next to Yugoslavia (although western historians have fucked up massively with retelling Yugoslavia; it wasn't so much ethnic tensions but economic conditions which allowed nationalism to flourish).

Also, where do you get those approval numbers from? I have to imagine it's practically impossible to get an accurate number from Syria due to the fact that it's been shat on the ground, and those that opposed him have pretty much left.

I'm glad you asked actually, cause I hadn't realized that number is from a couple years back and not super reliable ;P
It's true that it's difficult to get a proper opinion poll done but the only group I could find that's trying still shows it being pretty evenly split (https://www.orb-international.com/perch/...bles.pdf), although I'm not sure how I feel about the utter lack of any description of their methods.

My main point is that it isn't the job of the US or Russia to decide what happens in Syria. I support Assad in the situation not because he's a great guy or anything but because the alternative looks, to me, to be much worse.

RE: Syria government 'producing chemical weapons at research facilities'

One thing to consider Syrian polling is that communications there are probably likely destroyed, and hence being able to get an accurate number there is that much more difficult. I seriously doubt many have reliable communications out there to do good polling.

Regardless though, it's probably better that foreign interests stay out of the Middle East in general. Foreign interests there have always lead to some kind of trouble. Not to mention our interests in the Middle East always end up biting us in the ass, mainly because we're supporting causes out there that don't necessarily reflect our ideals (case in point Afghanistan; before the Civil War/invasion most Afghans were pretty secular)
