Age Mixing

So my wife told me about this. I wasn't there.

My 4 kids are 3, 3, 2, and 3 months. They went over to visit a family that had 5 kids. the 7 year old played with my 3 year olds, the 5 year old played with my daughter, and the 10 year old played with my baby.

Anyway, since my girl is so close in age to her older brothers, and since girls generally develop language early, and since boys develop language later, they are all mostly on the same page language wise.

I am wondering though, since their home environment is mostly the three of them, close in age, why is it that they don't want to be with kids their own age?

I doubt that very much energy is created by interacting with people the same age as you. there is less novelty, you can't really mentor, and you can't really learn from them.

I know mixing kids together with roughly the same maturity level is a good way to ensure they never mature. (home involves living with adults, but school takes kids away from that too).

It seems like one of the best and most healthy things for kids growing up is to be around people who are different, especially in age, but schools rob them of that, making them envy and fear the older classes and have contempt for the lower classes, just like your "smart" and "dumb" classes.

none of our kids wanted to leave.

ikd, just some interesting thoughts maybe

Age segregation is bullshit and is a fallacy. The reality is that it's better for everyone to cooperate with one another. Even adults.

Yup, age variety makes things more interesting. Or, well, any variety does that.

Age Mixing

I myself have gotten along better with those older than me than those my age. Don't know, it's just more interesting hanging out with the older kids and eventually the adults while still young. I remember being in like 4th grade and the boys in our class thought the 8th graders were so cool and mature.

I mean it's always good to learn from older ones no?

RE: Age Mixing

I completly agree with you. Is better to mix ages, may learn how to socialize different people of all ages, is the healthiest thing you can do as a parent. If is the opposite... well they wouldn't have any benefits from socializing people from all ages. I think I better go with adults and younger ones than people of my own age...

Aren't people of the same age more likely to bully as well?

RE: Age Mixing

if they are peers competition can exist. if one clearly has the upper hand, then respect might be more naturally in order??

maybe?

That's a reasonable hypothesis... if there are older people there's likely to be a degree of respect
