RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Hansgrohe's Male Fashion Blog

I have to say, looking back at some of my older fashion decisions and my photos in high school, I sucked at fashion and dressing. Back then, I was incredibly anti-fashion; I dressed however I wanted and thought that it was cool. Little did I know that in hindsight, it was a huge liability.

I dressed like a depressed kid from 1999 and didn't care for the quality of my clothes. You might not think it yet, but indeed, your image is everything. How you look, how you present yourself, what message you're sending, etc. Remember that first impressions are key.

I'm going to start a fashion blog here on School Survival. I'll try to tailor this towards teens/young adults.

Why the thread for fashion on School Survival?

Because I used to be terrible with fashion in high school and I imagine most of you guys are terrible with fashion too.

A lot of teenagers are rebellious but it doesn't mean you have to dress like crap. Your image is everything and it's very good to have a good sense of self consciousness when it comes to fashion and so on. By dressing better you will get noticed more, you will stand out, and you will develop positive self esteem.

This doesn't mean you have to shell out a billion bucks for designer clothes. Quite the opposite. Let's go over, shall we?

1. First off, what should I NOT wear?

1. Shirts with excessive logos - I used to have a lot of these. I had shirts with logos such as Nike, Adidas, etc which looked very bleh. I typically suggest you avoid shirts with large logos unless you happen to be working/advertising for this company, or such shirts are athletic ones and used for exercise. Design and some humor t shirts are perfectly fine though I wouldn't fill my wardrobe with these (I'd keep a 65/35 balance between plain and design/humor)

2. Excessively baggy clothes - Do you ever feel that your hoodie or shirt is a bit too saggy? Then it's time to size down. Clothes that are excessively baggy make us look a lot more bigger/fatter, and a lot less unprofessional and sexy. This is even more true if you happen to have a nicely built body. Get rid of all your shit that feels too baggy, and size down. For example, if you usually get a large, size down to a medium, etc.

3. Old, worn out clothes - Holy shit, I used to wear old/worn out clothing back then. No wonder I was getting no action. People will notice this; if you wear worn out clothing, you'll send a message that you're poor or don't care about your self image. You don't want this. Get rid of clothing that is worn out.

4. Dweeby glasses - Do you have glasses that make you look like a dweeb? Get rid of them. Ask for new glasses when you can. Try newer ones and see if one matches your style much better.

5. Dirty/worn out shoes - Trust me. Have at least 3 pairs of shoes. And keep em clean. Women in particular will look at your shoes.

6. Gym clothing in casual situations - This one irks me. Please, for the love of god, outside of actually exercising or going to the gym, do not wear gym clothing casually, as in exercise hoodies, sweats, track pants, etc. These clothes are for exercising.

7. Baggy sweaters/hoodies - These are pretty ugly to be honest and went out of fashion in the early 2000s. Leave this to the grunge/hip hop era of 1990-2002.

8. Baggy cargos and khakis - Yeck. I used to wear baggy cargo shorts very frequently. I remember these were very popular in the early 2000s and came back for a time in 2013-14. Ditch these. If you want cargo shorts, go for cargo shorts that have no side pockets (those are really ugly) and are well fitted.

2. What are good alternatives and suggestions?

1. Plain and design shirts - Seriously. Plain shirts will always work, and can be in any color you want them to be. They're not too conservative and they're stylish. Design shirts aren't bad either, and if you find the perfect ones that fit your style, you can look fantastic in them.

2. Size down - A general rule is that if you wear a large as an example, to wear a medium instead. I like to pick two shirts of different sizes and try them both on before I purchase them, and I pick the one that fits me the best.

3. Skinny jeans - There was a time where it was odd for a male to wear skinny jeans. Nowadays, it's incredibly common. Find jeans that fit the perfect size for you. Don't go too far that you're wearing jeans that tighten your crotch, but don't go excessively baggy either.

4. Shoes that make sense - If you're buying tennis shoes or sneakers, buy ones that fit your style and clothing. I love white Nike sneakers because they go great on most clothing and look simple yet stylish. Other good shoes out there to consider include Chelsea boots and some dress shoes as well. JCPenny typically has shoes on discount. I like shopping for shoes online as well.

5. Perfectly fitted hoodies - Always buy a hoodie that actually fits you perfectly well. Hoodies are actually great, I like them.

6. Long sleeve shirts - I really like long sleeve shirts. They're incredibly stylish and they're not expensive either.

3. What are other recommendations?
*Have at least 3 pair of shoes so that you can properly alternate.

*Have multiple pairs of belts as well.

*Sunglasses, necklaces and watches aren't bad; there are plenty of stylish yet very affordable watches out there. You don't need a Rolex. You can find discounted luxury watches at bargains as well, but remember to only buy from trusted sources, or else you could get a (perhaps very well done) fake.

*Hygiene. Brush your teeth, mouthwash, and floss well. Wear deodorant and cologne so you don't smell. Use a body wash as well. And more importantly, make sure your genitalia don't stink. Baby powder is good at getting rid of stinky genitals.

*With that said, cologne gives you a very good edge. I'd buy multiple pairs of cologne; there are good and inexpensive colognes out there. Cologne makes you smell very good and I would suggest it over something like, Axe body spray.

*More importantly, be very budget conscious. There's no need to waste your money on designer clothes, as nice as these are. Stores such as Target sell clothing that is pretty cheap and stylish. Of course, quality may vary and clothing can wear out after a year or two. The good news it that this clothing is cheap and you can constantly replace.

*Have a versatile wardrobe. Have clothing that can be mixed and matched easily. Buying a variety of colors helps in this field.

*Speaking of quality, always wash clothing colors separately and their corresponding water temperatures. Colors need warm water, dark colors need cold water, white clothes need hot water. Following this protocol will ensure that your clothing lasts as long as it can.

I hope this post is useful Smile

I have around 5 pairs of the same sweatpants that I wear every day. If it's hot out, I'll wear basketball shorts. I can't remember the last time I wore jeans.

I used to wear really crappy jeans and baggy cargo shorts. I didn't even bother to find replacements for a while...

Hansgrohe's Male Fashion Blog

I should note that I'm an amateur entrant in the fashion biz. Hopefully the summer will gain me some spending capital to expand my business venture.

Keep in mind that fashion is technically an "art" meaning if you're going for some "dirty worn gritty street hobo" style, then it makes sense to pull dirty shoes and worn clothing albeit mixing in some more clean pieces to at least hint that you're not actually a dirty poor hobo.

You mean the cargo pockets? I'm not sure, because then it sounds like you're saying to wear cargo shorts that don't have cargo pockets, in which case they aren't cargo shorts, I would think. The cargo pockets were the only reason I ever wore cargo pants/shorts -- rather than correcting it as a fashion choice, I think the real solution here was to address the perceived need to bring a bunch of shit out with me that I think I'm going to need but don't end up using. Cargo cargo cargo cargo cargo.

At that point they'd be called khaki shorts but I think many people use both cargo and khaki shorts interchangeably.

I did?

Man, with nearly 10k posts, I don't remember anything. Hell, even before it was like this. Half the threads I've made were literally duplicates in titles. I also referred to my own username numerous times. Must be a subconscious egomaniac or something.

But whatever, it's cool.
