RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The Home-Alone Homeschooler

"i'd be fine with you unschooling and that it's perfectly lawful, and i do trust you to be home alone, i just don't want you home alone and i can't work out of work."
solutions? i'm trying to look for some like sudbury schools but the nearest one is in austin, and i'm not close at all to austin.

i've also looked for these types of schools here in texas:
http://www.homeschool.com/new/difstyles.asp
http://www.rasmussen.edu/degrees/educati...f-schools/

but most of them would be me home alone, have a tuition, or none in texas.

Edit: I did find this article: http://www.homeschool.com/forum/forum_po...p?TID=7070
the main idea i get from it is that maybe me and a friend could unschool together, or me and a friend could visit afterschool or something like that.

I'm a teen girl who radically despises school for being the way it is. I'm also a poet/writer/artist. i couldn't decide on one thing.

Yeah, I guess hanging out at a friend's house is an option. Or some other relatives... or anyone reliable. Looks like you're finding some good ideas without any help. Smile

What is the reason he doesn't want you home alone? Safety?

thanks! so, he said he trusts me to be home alone, but it's mainly safety and kinda that i'd be lonely/start getting more anxious about social situations (which i know is true, at least for myself)

(he already knows school doesn't help me with situations lmao)

If anything, school stunted my social skills. I was actually more social and outgoing before I started going to school. So... yeah. I have no idea how people can seriously believe school teaches socialization. Rofl
I'm still dealing with social anxiety issues caused by people at school (I'm 34).

same here, at least so far. but i'm not sure if being home alone many-a-time will help them grow lol

It probably won't make social skills better, but at least it won't make them worse.

Interacting with humans is the only way to make it better, and it's pretty much essential that at least some of them are humans you can get along with. Otherwise you're just learning negative things.

It sounds like you're making progress. It sounds like you just need a bit more structure and you might be free.
