RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

my guidance/school counselor is unhelpful

if you've seen one of my previous posts, i said that my counselor has only told me to do extracurriculars, extra work, and more work i don't need instead of suggesting things i actually need to understand and work at my pace.

are there physical authoritative figures (other than parents) that can help me and my dad decide what is better for me and my education (such as a therapist, or out-of-school counselor that can help me)?

also if y'all could help, it would be great. (the only reason i'm seeing for physical people is that my dad, counselor, and school authorities ignore and sometimes ridicule online advice because "they could be cat fishing/lying/not truly educated".

thank you.

I'm a teen girl who radically despises school for being the way it is. I'm also a poet/writer/artist. i couldn't decide on one thing.

check out some of my musings. my Three Category System pretty much justifies the philosophy behind unschooling. those ideas stand on their own, but please feel free to argue with me or ask questions. (I wish my musings were more interactive)

I can give all sorts of rationale. no need to quote me. if you understand it well enough that makes it your idea

I thought your dad said you could do homeschooling by yourself at home?

The trouble with "physical people" is that they tend to have wildy varying opinions and are often biased in favour of doing things in "the conventional way", and it's hard to find ones that aren't.

I suppose you could try looking up homeschooling groups in your area and trying to ask some of the people there for advice.

RE: my guidance/school counselor is unhelpful

Anything school appointed is going to see the solution as more school. If are given a hammer and spend all day hammering nails, doing so will create a world in which even a screw will look like a nail to you. That is your school shrink.

Sadly anything not school appointed or related will not be free and therefore I have doubts your father will jump on that option.

I would need to know you better to offer any advice of my own but I can try to help if you want, and it would be free. As someone that saw a shrink for a while I can say that what felt best wasn't getting advice back on my problems but simply bitching to someone about them that wasn't going to tell me to shut up and get back to work or whatever. Sort of like a moral support.

Whilst some work diligently there are those who ask why. I am one of them

School counselors are mostly shit. Trust me. My counselor was a fucking old bitch who I hope gets fired.
