RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

What we do here

Some say that all we do is complain. Some have complained that School Survival isn't activist enough. I think that we here at School Survival are a very special group of people and the purpose we serve here is completely valid and justified.

"Survival" as the name indicates is what we are about. We who are doomed by fate to put up with the world we are given find school to be arguably one of the greatest challenges to our spiritual well-being. I say "spiritual" well-being because no amount of medication, diet, or exercise is gonna fix these symptoms we experience. We have all more or less realized that school itself is at the very heart of our psychoses.

If any of us are going to work towards change it is going to be first within the confines of our own world, ya know, that one where we find ourselves stuck in school. No major impact (upon others we don't know) is likely to come from any of us until we have solved the problem of our own material existence, which is of course another thing we talk about; surviving the world of making money, especially since school does jack shit to help you figure that out. Consider the kind of odd way that SouRiser makes a living. Time and talent liberated by money help things like SS come into reality.

I lack time and money, so all the relevant reading I would do and post about simply can't happen. we all have limitations imposed upon us externally without our control. Nothing can change that fact, which is why "Survival" IS the Ultimate Battle.

Whatever we would like to do with ourselves, whatever goals we would work towards, we have to remain intact to face the challenges that come from doing anything real, such as managing what time is left after putting up with whatever life you find yourself stuck with.

We are here to complain about a great injustice done to many. There is everything right with that. We who have very few choices find guidance here to figure out the best ones, and because of shitty laws and customs we do frequently find ourselves stuck, stuck, and more stuck. What else can anyone do but survive? to not let ourselves be defeated?

There is nothing easy about being stuck with shitty ass parents or being forced into some shitty ass school, so we try to survive. We vent, we complain, we support one another, we show solidarity. I am sure we help a lot more people survive than we realize because quite a lot of people read but don't post. Sometimes its just enough to know you're not alone.

No good way to conclude this by the way...

What we do here

I want to change things in the world. And I am changing them. Little by little I know I am making an impact.

I would like to encourage people to not just accept their shitty lives and not tell themselves something like they are doomed by fate.

To me what people need is first of all emotional support. I don't consider myself spiritual btw.

I would like to see SS be even more supportive. I have been writing about this and thinking about it.

I feel more optimistic I guess than TA.

I believe we can each make a difference and united we have more chance of that.

I know laws can and do change by the way.

History has proven that laws and beliefs can and do change.

So I would like to encourage people to think about what they need.

I have developed my own system for improving our lives and society.

I believe in it. It seems to work. The hardest thing for me is unlearning the destructive/toxic things I was taught by those around me all of my life.

I agree with a lot of what TA said by the way and I appreciate his intention to help those who are trying to survive.

I guess I have a higher goal than just survival. I want to change things.

I had a very good talk with a guy once. We talked about the fucked up system. I asked him what we can do to change it. He said something I believe is very wise. He said:

The first thing is to stop believing in it.

I have definitely stopped believing in the system.

By that I mean the economic system, the punishment/
"justice" system and the learning/domestication/"education system".

I do agree that an important step is working on yourself Changing your beliefs is one of those things you can do and this site will definitely help you with that.

I would like to see more unity here and yes, more "activism". More "solidarity."

I forgot to mention the legal system specifically btw. For example the laws that discriminate against people of a certain age - typically those under 18. And the so called run away laws - as well as the obvious one - forced schooling.

I am interested to know how you feel about this post.

Thank you for reading.

RE: What we do here

I agree we need more activism, but the users are so scattered that the most productive form of activism ive encouraged is the one where you find like minded people and grow families the right way. you gain some perspective doing it that way, and perhaps through them things will get better.

i argue that raising pious children is the most underappreciated form of social activism. and the great disadvantage we complain about is not having our upbringing subsidized by our parents. we have the power though to raise our own kids right and organize our own homes.
