RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder?

I was in a mental hospital a couple of weeks ago and in distress asked to see my file. Amongst the diagnoses was Oppositional Defiant disorder, which doesn't make sense to me. I have mixed feeling about it, most of them bad.
On one hand, it's to my understanding that there's probably more to it than the DSM description, otherwise half of anything with a brain would get that diagnosis.
In the other hand, nobody really ever discussed it with me and as well, not only am I skeptical of such a disorder, but every time I read the DSM criteria I feel insulted because it's basically a load of insults and it doesn't seem to fit me.
I have a friend who apparently had it, but I haven't got any good opportunities to discuss it with him, or with any of my therapists.
Now without insulting my friend or anyone like him, or attempting to blindly comfort me, is there anything I should hear, and any way I can tell if this diagnosis is a sham in my personal case or in general?
If anybody here identifies as having it, or has been diagnosed, or has particulat knowledge of it, I could use your help.

RE: Diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder?

It's a fairly generic diagnosis that's often given to kids who back talk a lot in school. Sometimes it's done as a favor to the parent because it helps them collect SSI and it requires the school to write an IEP which can work either in your favor or against you. It makes it harder for you to get out of school suspension and for teachers to fail you because it qualifies as a disability. If you're no longer a minor this information isn't applicable to you.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Wait. I'm not a minor any more, so what was it doing in such a recent file?
And will it get in the way of me adopting children in the future?
I know that Psychiatric conditions are legally considered differently from physical disabilities.

I'm sorry. I only know about it in relationship to my students who are minors. I don't know anything about how such a diagnosis would impact an adult.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

So it's a disorder that basically only exists for some people's convenience? As I suspected... Razz

RE: Diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder?

I have a friend living with rent control because he's diagnosed as autistic. because he got fired hie doesnt just pay no rent at the moment, but received $100 a month.

this could exist for other conditions. since money is hard to come by in America I'd say exploit it as much as tolerable/possible

“Opposition Defiant Disorder” — Non-Conformity and Anti-Authoritarianism Now Considered an Illness

That article might help you.
"If Albert Einstein was a youth today, there’s a good chance he would be saddled with an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis, possibly even Opposition Defiant Disorder (ODD) as well. He ignored his teachers, failed college entrance examinations several times and was hard-pressed in holding down a job."

"When he did gain entrance to college, one of his professors chided Einstein, “You have one fault; one can’t tell you anything.” The very characteristics that troubled authorities, were exactly the ones which helped him to excel."

"But as Levine rightly observes, “Do we really want to diagnose and medicate everyone with “deficits in rule-governed behavior”?"

"Some of our greatest freethinkers throughout history were non-conformists and challenged authority. At what point do we simply become a nation of zombies, drugged out on pharmaceuticals, unable to think for ourselves?"

"I’M BEGGING YOU, PRINCE ZUKO! It’s time for you to look inward and begin asking yourself the big question: who are you and what do YOU want?"
" While it is always best to believe in one’s self, a little help from others can be a great blessing"
