RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I hate my generation (Rant)

Warning, wall of text incoming.

I just hate them, they are the most unproductive, lazy, self-centered generation we have ever had. Now I can hear you screaming from a mile away "baby boomer exposed!" but, like you, i'm a millennial. And I hate my generation. Whenever I try to approach someone about doing something that isn't staring at our phones and fucking around on Instagram (which I hate btw, noticing a trend here.) they say "yeah maybe" and try to get out of my prescence as fast as physically fucking possible (god forbid doing something productive with your life, Fu) Every time I invite a friend over and try to do something that isn't on their god damn screen, they end up fucking around on their phone until they leave.

Just to add to that, it's not like its raining friends around here. I live in the middle of fucking nowhere and it takes a lot of planning to get someone out here.

So, members of school survival, are all of your friends unproductive idiots like mine? Or will my dreams of productivity die with me and only me?

Producing something, even if it is bad, just making something for the world, or at least you to enjoy.

does work count? i don't have friends but the people i live with work really long hours so they aren't really unproductive in that regard. but that's a very small sample of people.

in regards to the "glued to their phones" thing, i guess it's an instant gratification vs working towards producing something and getting gratification from hard work thing

idk, it's not as though older generations aren't glued to their tv/phones in the same way

I think the short answer is that people don't have an inspiring vision for what to do instead. Maybe there's some way to change that?

If only there was a way to motivate this spoiled generation.

Maybe there is. I think one approach that could help with at least some people is to talk to them about their interests, ideas about life, ideas about the future and so on. I think a huge part of the problem is actually school and all the coercion and crushing of interests that goes along with that. School factory-processes young people and many parents care only about school performance, and that leads to escapism, especially with the technology, media, and games that are so accessible.

But I don't think the technology, media, and games are the root problem. I think a lot of the root problem is that young people are told they are powerless over their own lives, so they sink into complacency.

But the question remains for most young people of what they'll do once they are no longer bound by school and are faced with the realities of figuring out and living their life. And what that means is different for each person.

Overall I think there must be ways for things to change, the challenge is figuring out what they are.

"spoiled generation."
Laugh

If by 'spoiled' you mean they never had any free time to figure out who they are and what they actually really want in life, then yeah, maybe.

This is true. This seems to be more of a problem than it was before, so perhaps this is the likely culprit for "your generation".

The other "problem", if there is even a specific cause that can be defined, is that most people don't like to think too hard. This is not a recent thing though, people have always been that way. The symptoms are just different now.

RE: I hate my generation (Rant)

I have 6 very good friends and 3 good talkin buddies at work. the only one of those 9 not a millenial is over 60.

my brother and my in laws are all millenials and only one of them is annoyingly glued to his iPad. 1 out of 4.

Adam Conovers lecture "millenials don't exist" is something you should watch. I kind of doubt the idiot percentage really changes much from time to time because I have yet to see anything compelling to to say otherwise. in everytime there are ways to escape dealing with things and stupidity is a moral defect everybody is equally capable of.

Watch on YouTube

you might just suck at making friends but more than likely your town sucks. I had about 2 friends before I went to college out of town and them I made a lot. lost touch with most of the after college though.
