RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

I've been reading a lot about Autism and Asperger's lately, and I saw somewhere that it apparently only affects less than 1% of the population... judging by the amount of people on SS who seem to have it, that seems strange.
So I'd like to do some research here... we can use this quiz since it seems to be the most commonly used one, and people seem to accept its results as generally accurate.
My results:
Your neurodiverse (Aspie) score: 123 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 85 of 200
You are very likely neurodiverse (Aspie)
Hidden stuff:
The first time I took this, I thought, nah, that can't be right, this test must be flawed.
Then I took two others and scored above the threshold on those too. Then I started obsessively reading about Asperger's/Autism... so, at the moment, I'm about 90% convinced I really do have it, and have had it all my life, and it kind of explains a lot...
This site has been very helpful for explaining what all the complicated diagnostic criteria actually mean: https://musingsofanaspie.com/essential-reading/
Her books are good too, even though most of what's in the books is also on the site.

Kinda surprising because I have asperger's.
That is pretty interesting. I suppose it's unlikely that any online test will be perfectly accurate. Maybe even the in-person tests could be inaccurate, I do remember reading that they can get those wrong too.
I'm just assuming that I do have it, because the descriptions fit me, and the workarounds for various things seem helpful. I think that matters more than what any test says.

I actually am an Aspie. The reason why I got the result I did is because I don't have as many common symptoms. My social awkwardness can pass under the radar as plain shyness. The pacing and romance related ones are probably the reason it says I'm not neurotypical. I find it harder to have a romantic bond than most and I don't think about that as much as the average man going through puberty. I am heterosexual and not asexual, but I also have imaginary relationships in my dreams. As for the traditional dating one, what was it trying to imply? I prefer 50's style dating (I'm old fashioned in that sense), I'd gladly pay for her and act like a gentleman.
so far I've got the highest score. I wonder if we see ourselves differently than "more regular people" [citation needed]

Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 70 of 200

I should probably get some people who know me IRL to go through the quiz with me and give me input. I have no idea what other people say about me, for example, because they never tell me. And my one friend insists that I'm really bad at remembering faces, while I personally don't think I have any issues with that...

i REMEMBER faces like no tomorrow, i just struggle with interpretting them. it might just be that im more self involved and not actively trying

This has been a test of the emergency pointless argument system. Had this been a real pointless argument, someone would have been called a facist.

Not a huge difference. This is after reading 3 books about this stuff... I thought I might answer some stuff differently due to understanding it better.
