RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Heart A Sudbury School Quote I Really Like

http://www.sudval.org/

"I didn’t really think about getting an education. I didn’t understand the idea of having to artificially ‘get’ an education. I thought that you lived in the world and you got smarter because every day you were learning. I thought that there was no way to get dumber unless you were erasing stuff out of your brain. It seemed to me that one day you were talking to someone about one subject and another day you were talking to someone about another, and that eventually you would get around to all of them."

"People would ask, ‘What classes do you do?’. And you’d think, ‘classes? We don’t do classes, you know. Look around. There are no classrooms here.’ They’d say, ‘What did you learn today?’ And we’d think, ‘What did we learn today? What are you talking about?’ Because it wasn’t as if you went into the library and learned your facts for the day. You had a dozen conversations with people. We weren’t learning subject by subject. We were learning in a much more organic manner. You would be doing a lot of different things and you would learn them in little bits and pieces that would start adding up to much bigger pictures. You wouldn’t really know where it came from a lot of the time. By the time you were done learning about something, information was coming from so many different sources, from books and from people you were talking to, and from a long drawn out experience, that you had no idea how you learned it."

"I’M BEGGING YOU, PRINCE ZUKO! It’s time for you to look inward and begin asking yourself the big question: who are you and what do YOU want?"

Please tell me you actually sat through that hour long interview with Dan Greenberg too. That was some good stuff

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um2c9o25nfM "What Sudbury Valley is About"

I was putting this off because of the length for a while then I forgot. I just watched it and I love this guy's ideas.
"To train children to become viable members of a democratic community is to immerse them in a democratic community from the very earliest age." Heck yes. I find it so weird when people talk about needing to, "Prepare young people for adulthood," yet we are deprived of experiencing the basics of that kind life.

Also, the interviewer said that they didn't HAVE to vote. This whole time I thought they had to and it didn't seem to fit with the school's philosophy. Now I know the reality~

"Humans are naturally curious."
"What your saying is opening places for possibilities to emerge."
"In your school kids are supposed to do what they like."
"The school is completely ungraded, it's like a community."
"The most important thing I think anyone can do in this school is play."
"I want kids to be confident in their ability to make structures in their minds."
"The only thing we want for them is the ability to be responsible for themselves."
"If a person wants to become a doctor of course he's gonna learn how to read.""...in like a month." "He doesn't sit through six years..."
"Not everyone learns math..." "I don't know if Mozart needed math and I don't care" "It's not important to everybody to have the same set of basics."
"The only way people can relate to each other as people is if there is no hidden power one has over the other."

<3 Fucking golden! This interview summed up most of I believe/ have read about... (*-*)

RE: A Sudbury School Quote I Really Like

important point about the video for cynics and skeptics. the school was about 20 years old at the time of that interview, and its about 50 years old now.
