RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Heart I never knew a place like this existed.

Goingcrazy
I never expected to find a place filled with people who think like I do.
-My family thinks I'm not serious when I say I hate school.
-My teachers quote drop out rates like school is supposed to be a magical place that no one should ever want to leave.
-Some of my classmates and teachers think good grades = high intellect and that you are crazy to not take seriously the subjects that have been forced on us against our will.
-Though, I did find some blogs and videos about unschooling, dropping out, why non coercive motivation is better, the school system, etc that have no hate in the comments. x3
-Now I have you people!

I know! I felt the same - its amazing to finally be somewhere where everyone feels the same about this!

At this point I feel like good grades = poor planning for the future. My grades don't matter one single bit now - everything I did beyond the bare minimum needed to pass was all for nothing. Completely wasted.

Sad - but someday we'll save anyone else from that fate!

Yup, the internet really does have pretty much everything you can think of, and a whole lot more you never would think of. Laugh

This is one of my favourite things to do! Biggrin

As well as just doing nothing. Preferably in nature somewhere (a garden with trees and cats is pretty good).

That's funny, I enjoy researching things I already believe to reassure myself of how right I am. We have so much in common!

That seemed kind of sarcastic. xD But, that's also what I like doing. I have a tad bit of a lingering herd mentality, so it feels good to justify my rebellious ideas with other people's similar ideas.
Though, most of the time when I research, it's because I know nothing about a new topic.

RE: I never knew a place like this existed.

Thanks for subscribing to my dead YouTube channel! Ha, I've got 4 kids now, and a full-time job, its gonna be awhile 'til I upload anything new...

One thing I've noticed about school is not that it extends childhood, it delays it. When you are in school you aren't properly existing. Some people never start existing. Whenever you are freed from the shackles it is as if you are the same age as when they were put on. You have no real idea about the world because you've been kept from it. You don't have any serious hobbies because you've never had time for them, and frequently people don't know who they are because they haven't spent much time with themselves. People have poorly developed morality because the cold system ignores moral questions and frequently encourages lying and rewards all sorts of criminal behavior. Growth is stunted while time passes.

Looking back to how I passed my time when I was unemployed, I mostly lived like I would have if I was like 12 or so, even though I had two and later three kids. Like the growth of a seed into its fruit bearing maturity, my unfolding was just so delayed it seemed. People like me in their 20's and sometimes early 30's might be playing video games like I was because they probably should have done it when they were younger, but their youth was robbed, so picking it back up where they left off. It makes perfect sense, but people are indeed weak of vision.

Like your quote from Uncle Iroh, Thumbsup, "who you are" is not a question you simply ask and get an answer. Recognition, respect, and the free time to test the answer is what's needed. I was married, so I had the regular company of somebody who actually cared about me and wanted to see me become a better man. Lack of work was hard, asking for money was hard, but the time to think about it with somebody who wanted the best for me (and herself too) was how I managed to partially grow up. (I just turned 30)

Counting from when I first starting having free-time and good company, I'm probably about 10 years old.

I totally agree. It's nice to see some like-minded people on a website and just be able to TALK and complain about the dominant stressor in most of our teenage lives: School.

Plus, hey, we all agree how screwed up school is, and there's always going to be another generation of stressed-out, fear-ridden kids who ALSO hate school.
