RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Shocked Have you ever played hooky without anyone knowing?

If so, how did it go for you? Did you get caught?

I've never actually had the balls to do it. My school is really strict on this stuff, and my parents would actually murder me if they knew what I did. But I found out that I finally have a chance to do it this Monday. My mom's gonna be out of the house all day, and my step mom will be at work until 4 pm. So I'm thinking I'll just hang around at the park, then sneak back home after she's gone. Monday is the worst day for me lessons-wise, and plus, I'll have my new game by then! So I just have to take this opportunity Biggergrin

only one problem...

You gotta phone in if you're gonna be absent. I guess I'll have to pretend to be one of my moms O_O

guhh wish me luck...

tell me of your experiences! or if you're planning to do it Biggrin

Have you ever played hooky without anyone knowing?

I thought playing hooky was pretending to be sick, not just skipping school, lol. Looks like it is more general like that though.

My school would call home when you didn't show up, so I only had to be home to take care of the answering machine to cover myself for the short term. My mom did have a cell phone but didn't give the school that number for whatever reason. As for the long term, as far as I can recall, report cards may have had a count of how many absences and tardies I'd had that period, which could open an interrogation if it didn't seem to add up. But now I understand there's a lot better access to online grade (and presumably attendance) tracking.

So, you phone it in. Do you know if the school is going to call back a number on file to verify? Or maybe you can arrange to make the call from the number the school has on file, or to monitor the phone known to the school for any "helpful" messages about your absence. After getting away with it short-term, will your parents be able to go online and see whether you showed up? Will there be a surprise on the next report card?

Stepping through the whole procedure and possibilities like that is my only advice -- I assume the process of getting away with skipping school is much the same as it's always been, but maybe I don't know about some new tricks they have to catch you.

Fair warning, this is addictive. I wonder if doing this a fair bit gave me the trouble I have now with taking punctuality seriously. Razz

Well, there are probably better things than public school to be so diligent and responsible about, anyway.

RE: Have you ever played hooky without anyone knowing?

Like every other day during my senior year.. I'd go to school for like half the day then either go home for lunch and not return or just simply walk out between classes and drive home. Never called or got caught and my parents didn't care, worked out pretty well.
