RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Self Aware in dreams and then drowning?

Whenever I dream, I sort of know I'm dreaming. I watch the dream go by like a movie or a tv show. Whenever I try to make a choice or choose to do something in a dream (like lucid dreaming) I get a sensation I can only describe as...drowning. It'll start with me thinking it is a dream, and then, in the dream, I won't be able to open my eyes. I'll struggle to open them but I can't. I'll then start thinking of running water and or a drowning sensation, like I'm trying to breath but I can't. Then I'll wake up.

I don't have any sleep issues, no breathing problems that would mean I'm ACTUALLY not breathing and it wakes me up. When I wake up from these types of dreams I'm not gasping for air or anything. The only thing I can think of to partially explain these dreams would be that I struggle to open my eyes in the dream, which causes me to open my eyes in real life.

Example: I'm in my house about to take a bath. There is a swirling vortex or something in my bedroom. Then there is no bath and the tub is empty, but the sink is on. The bathroom door is closed now, and I am outside the door. All the lights in the house are on and I can hear the sink. The sink is overflowing and leaking out from under the door. I go to turn the sink off but I can't see anything. My eyes are closed and I can't open them. I keep trying and trying to open my eyes so I can turn the sink off. And then I wake up.

Also, my dreams aern't only about water and then feeling like drowning. The physical appearance of water has nothing to do imo of the feeling of drowning. I feel like a few of these dreams were major deja vu years later in real life. When I was young I had a dream of running around a carpeted hallway for whatever reason. Years later I was in that same hallway walking around in my Aunt's new house. Same carpet, same walls and colors.

Any thoughts?

Do you feel an urge to piss afterwards? I hear watery dreams are often due to a full bladder.

RE: Self Aware in dreams and then drowning?

If you're lucid, can you just avoid thinking about water? Some kind of sleep paralysis maybe?
