RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Private School?

Well, first off I would like to say I am 13.

My mom asked me what I did in class. I came clean and said I pretty much sat on my computer waiting for everyone else to play catch up. My mom asked me how fast I finish my work and I say i'm usually one of the first few done. So my mom wanted me to look up challenge diplomas, found nothing and now she is considering sending me to a private school.

Can someone tell me the advantages of both public and private schools? thanks in advance Biggrin

Private School?

Private school takes your money directly and considers it prestigious. Public school takes your money indirectly and considers it a bare minimum.

Sometimes private schools can be good if they actually show a strong academic system but that's something that needs to be looked at with questions and intiuition. Private schools are businesses and like used car dealers, there are many trying to sell you a dud and make it seem like a great deal.

Public schools are generally decent unless you live in a crappy district. Having public funding makes them more likely to offer greater opportunities, often by law or pressure of government.

However, don't make assumption that private school is smarter. Public schools can and do have programs for advanced students. It's something worth looking into. Don't gotta celebrate finishing fast or something though. Other factors can affect this.

Private School?

It totally depends on the school. If you can get sent to a democratic school, that'd probably be awesome. Look up "Sudbury schools" to see if there's one near you.

This video talks a lot about democratic schools and some other stuff:

I think most other kinds of private schools are generally quite similar to public ones, as far as the general structure goes.

I hear those exotic schools can be pretty good.

Private education institutions usually take money from your bank account for the service education I went to a private institution high school and college is also private usually these institution's are less the 15 people in class and you can learn more while attending
While in Public school is 30 people in class and it will be hard to learn usually you will need to read at home

RE: Private School?

I forgot about Waldorf schools. There are quite a lot of them. I am an extremist in that I like Sudbury/Unschooling best and Waldorf is an evil middle ground.

So Waldorf sounds halfway there between convention and "best"

Purity is to Believe only that which deserves it.
Wisdom is to follow only the Opinion which makes the best use of evidence.
Excellence is to be mindful of all these things in Living.

Private School?

The issue isn't so much about public vs. private school, but about the approach a given school (or alternative like a self-directed learning center or homeschooling) takes.

If you'd like an alternative to conventional school, there are various options. Homeschoolers/unschoolers can also get into college or find jobs in various ways.

Do you have an idea of what you'd like to do in the future?
