RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Video A nice video I've found

The video is in Portuguese, then I translated its main idea
The video
Every bad student have ever asked to his/her teacher "How am I going to use this in my life?". Well, there are three answers most teachers give:
  • You need this to do your entrance exam
  • You need this, because every knowleadge is important and/or an example of an very, very especific use for that
  • It improves your brain skills
And an explanation for each topic:
  • Its the proof that it is useless
  • If every knowleadge is important, why aren't you doing a Japanese course?
You used this knowleadge one time in your life. One.
  • It looks like a Hollywood move, where there is a basketball player, (or whatever) training hard and achieve his goals, but real life is not 100% like this. What happends with an a class of students doing second degree equations? Who like that are going to success, and who does't like that
Most parents put their children in a system of 12 years (in Brazil) to make him/her a good person memorizing furmulas and other useless things to do an exam. It sounds like "WhatYuck"?! Isn't cooking more useful? First aid? Come on! We need to cook everyday. When do we balance equations? Use Bhaskara formula?
[introduction to ordenate and subordinate clauses] Have you ever heard that Portuguese is dificult? We really have many grammar rules, but there are two "classes" of grammar rules that are 10000% useless. They are called ordenate and subordinate clauses. They control the phrases' order. A person who speak Portuguese fluently doesn't need to know about it. Who cares if "the cat saw an aquarium full of fishes" is different from "The cat saw an aquarium which is full of fishes"?! It's the same thingMad!!!

Lets talk cooking man!

If people could take effective care of themselves and their needs, who would pay top dollar to engineers who help mass production make more money?

I wanna make my own soap. I'll need to buy the oil, probably the essential oil too... what if we GREW OUR OWN FOOD!?!?!?!?

Where do you live man? We got cold winters here in the American midwest, and super hot summers. We grow corn.... snore

Whoa! You are being too sidereal! Growing food is different from Cooking. We grow corn in Brazil, too, but not in an individual way.

My father didn't use to cook invitingly when he met my mom. She taught him.

Check out Heirloom tomatoes. Thats my big thing.

Aside from buying the cheese, I make pizza from scratch, even the italian sausage. NOTHING is better than some heirlooms in your sauce
