RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

New section: Surviving Society?

I was contacted by Maktao about some ideas for either a brand new site/forum, or to expand SS to include information and discussion about all the things that school doesn't teach, that people might want some help with.

The new proposed section would include subtopics like:

House and Home (Getting and keeping a place to live)
Dealing With Income (Getting and keeping a job, Doing Taxes, basic budgeting, things to watch out for)
Law-related stuff
Food & cooking will move here too
Maybe some stuff about social skills.

What do you guys think? Would you find this useful? The idea is to find all the best info about these topics on the internet and sticky them in the new subforums, and then obviously people can ask questions and stuff too.

Thoughts?

Good idea, add subtopics school usually doesn't cover. This is perfect. If it ever is added I would defintly use it and maybe occasionally ask questions.

It's fairly well produced and mostly open minded. You may as well link your website to it.

In concept it sounds pretty good. I think some of the people on here eventually have no idea what to do after school.

New section: Surviving Society?

I do apologise for the huge delay in my response. The email I was sent about this got buried and lost, but I finally managed to find it, and the link, and my login information.... The only thing I haven't managed to lose yet is my head.

So, I brought up this idea with SoulRiser a while ago, because I had seen a Youtube video about all the things that school doesn't teach, and I had considered making a forum based around filling in the blank spaces that school doesn't do. Well, sure enough, after some searching, I found this forum, and figured, partnership, or add in some sections. Easiest option, would just to add some sections, as was outlined.

Now that I remember how to log in, I'll actually be able to contribute more.

I was put through the public school system here in Ontario, Canada, and there's a lot of stuff that I didn't learn. I've also heard a great deal about schools in the United States, and it honestly scares me that even the simple things that should be taught, aren't. How do you apply for a job? How do you do taxes? That's stuff that almost everyone will have to do, yet almost no one ever learns how.

Schools are seemingly too busy teaching about microscopic biomechanics, something that you'll only ever need if you enter into fields of medicine or certain areas of science. If you get a job as a factory laborer, construction worker, or literally any other job, I can promise you, with almost complete certainty, you'll never need to know about the structure of cells. Same goes with the mathematical equation of a curved line. I have never needed that, yet even in my applied level class, that's all we learned.

Schools are designed to teach students how to pass tests, not be productive in society. It is my hope that these added sections might help those who make use of them, to learn those things that school doesn't teach.

New section: Surviving Society?

Do I really need to know how to measure a parabola if I became a journalist for Fox News? No.

Do I need to know cell structure if I became the assistant manager at Subway? No.

Do I need to know what year the Mexican-American War started if I became an adult film director? No.

Will I need to know how to file taxes? Yes.
Will I need how to apply for a job? Yes, I will.

Schools (for the most part) only focus on standardized testing scores. And even then, the United States government's way of spreading funding is fucked up. Shouldn't the worst schools get extra funding?

The whole system, from start to finish, is incredibly messed up. Students who want to become a sports journalist (for example) shouldn't be forced to know how to use the quadratic equation to find the values of x for a test that does absolutely nothing to help them in the future.

Honestly, the ideal way to make the system work is teach students information they will use throughout their lives (basic literacy, basic technological literacy, basic math, general history and important stuff for real life (like how to file taxes)) up until 7th grade (Year 8). A person would pretty much become independent at the age of 13 (be able to get a driver's license, create their own bank accounts, be able to vote, etc.). After that, students can join the workforce or go to college and pursue a degree to help them en route to their careers.

There would be no standardized tests in my ideal system. Or grades. Because it's about how we perform in real life, not on a sheet of paper (or on a computer screen) filled with questions. There would be a more equal split of power between student and teacher.

Schools also wouldn't be able to just teach one side of a controversial topic. I'll use evolution versus creationism, but this could apply to many topics. A school in Indiana (if I'm right) can just teach students about creationism while totally ignoring the points of evolution. But, a school in Ohio can just teach evolution while not acknowledging any points of creationism at all. Both are equally brainwashing. Which leads to absolutely nothing good happening. This could also fuck up schools that are in two different states (there is actually a schoolactually a school that sits on the line between these two states).

Yeah, you might think that a 13 year old is way too young to be independent. There is a ton of peer pressure on 13 year olds to do stupid stuff. There won't be as much peer pressure with them being in the workforce. In the workforce, they shouldn't be paid less than someone older because of age.

It will also help the growing seperation between teenagers and adults in the current world. W

RE: New section: Surviving Society?

I don't think SS needs a new forum. Expanding it to other sections for info and discussions that are outside of school, yet relate to school alternatives and not-school-as-usual living, is what we should be doing; like the ideas xcriteria and Lisa mentioned with Catalyst.

I think we should be doing more though. I'm on another forum that's going to be taking new steps to advertise their site, and the administration intends to pay for an expensive Google adwords campaign to bring in new users. However, for the foreseeable future it will remain as a non-profit site, so the owner will be using his own money.

It's safe to assume that that's why you started a SS Patreon, eh, Soul? Perhaps to do things like that? I think campaigns like advertising and funding are really much needed because activity has been much lower than it generally has been ever since I first joined. To me it seemed like this past school year was the slowest for SS in a long time. It's a shame because I know we can be doing so much more.

Seven crappy hours of our lives.

It's a marvelous idea! After all, the problems involved, and the reasons they're there, are similar.
