RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

School Survival: The Webcomic

Is anybody here better at art than I am? Even just a weense? Just enough that we can have some consistent-looking pictures of those bald apelike critters that walk upright?
'Cause If we were to portray the full range of reasons school sucks in an appealing, widely available format. Because every time I find an aknowledgement of school's inadequacy they never go into detail and it's always burried under other things like non-oppression related vampire puns or something. And it's generally a throwaway joke, or being used to shape the way we look at a character instead.
What if there were some sort of story to correspond to or shape the way the readers look at school and the related societal demerits?
Anybody on board?

My ideas
-Satiric parody of the glamorous school genre, like there's an unusual school where unusual things happen, but the whole thing has more of a "even Hogwarts sucks" or blatantly allegorical theme than an Academy Of Adventure played straight.
-Possibly something for students the way Black Beauty was for horses, and with a vibe like classical dystopian stuff even though it's also pretty slice-of-life
-Voices, maybe narration, that represent the omnipresent anti-student, anti-youth rhetoric that can't easily be pinned down to a single source. Sort of as a foil to the protagonists, in league with what the antagonists imply, say, and do

Write 'em down, then find a graphic artist.

The thing is, how? I don't know how to find one, or how to ask to collaborate with them, especially given the conditions we'd have to work with. I was hoping someone might volunteer so they could be the one asking the questions. Amongst less explainable things.

School Survival: The Webcomic

There are tools that make it easier to create comics without needing to draw. I have no personal experience whatsoever with any of these, but it may be worth looking into:
https://duckduckgo.com/html/?q=comic+generator

If we agree on a generator/app/whatever, then anyone who uses the same thing with the same settings can theoretically make SS comics, without relying too much on one person. In theory.

We could always try artistic media that convey humor without requiring too much time or talent. A nation-based-RP community I'm a part of likes making polandballs, for instance.

Well what I need is something that would attract readers, and non-original art would probably be a turnoff. Because without something distinctive and new, the comic might be more likely to be viewed as griping instead of muckraking.
