RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

John Taylor Gatto Lectures

I have a bunch of John Taylor Gatto lectures saved on my google drive. I think what I am going to do is begin posting them as I gradually begin re-listening to them.

As a speaker, he is surprisingly non-redundant, unlike Chomsky who arguably has more research under his belt... (not really sure on that point though, to be honest)

Anyway, I've got a lot to re-listen to before posting. Thing is, I want to offer accurate lecture descriptions beyond just titles, so I need to revisit them.

EDIT:
These titles by the way, are modifications of existing titles as per my tastes. I don't know why, but it seems like people who post these things on YouTube or Vimeo kinda don't care about making it sound or look nice, like, I'm picturing some 40 year old white guy in a house with too much disorganized crap in it struggling to understand the YouTube things and "I think I did it right"...

RE: John Taylor Gatto Lectures

The Seven Lessons of Schooling - the Hidden Curriculum

This is probably one of my favorite lectures. Apparently he is in Puget Sound at some kind of home schooling convention. Puget Sound is a subdivision of Seattle I believe.

In this lecture, he explains how the effects of the structure of schooling itself creates a myriad of problems. Since most people I think only imagine a class room when discussing education, this lecture certainly brings to light to overall institution and its internal logic.

My brother-in-law joined these forums because I made him, but he never posts, and I doubt even comes here anymore. I actually think of him during this lecture because he describes the effects of schooling on kids and it reminds me of what has happened to my brother-in-law.

RE: John Taylor Gatto Lectures

Beyond Columbine

This was delivered at a Barnes and Noble in New York City to a crowd of what appeared to be about 20 people. I find that funny because it was an amazing lecture that only a small number of people were able to actually witness.

I would say this is his most accessible lecture since he doesn't delve too deeply into the theory or history of schooling. He hits, in a minor way, just about every point he has ever made, so this is good way to introduce new people to Gatto.

This is one of the few lectures I have which actually has video to go along with it. It was originally posted on YouTube, though I've edited out the introduction.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws4a-GMQ1MI

In this lecture:
- That he taught for 29 years and 8 months, not the 30 years often quoted.
- He didn't actually have a teaching license when he started. He stole his roommate's.
- That the leader of the Columbine school board, after they overthrew the new democratic system, pre-massacre, about the outrage at the overthrow "I don't suppose we're going to start killing each other?"
- He detailed the distribution of wealth in the US at the time of the lecture, demonstrating the absurdity of the promise that the world has a place for you if you do well "here, here, and here."
- There was a Q&A at the end
- He said according to Dan Greenburg, 25 contact hours is enough to teach the entire Math curriculum. 50 if you include the "arcane" things like calculus.

RE: John Taylor Gatto Lectures

Beyond Schooling

This was probably his best organized lecture. Very comprehensive. Somewhat difficult. He analyzes the purpose of education as it was outlined by Alexander Inglis, a very important figure in the history of education, which is mostly shadows looming within the elite sectors of society.

This lecture probably introduced Gatto to most of the Muslims who know about him because this event was in Toronto and Hamza Yusuf gave a follow up speech.

I edited out the intro and Hamza Yusuf's speech. The full audio, but no video, can still be found here:

RE: John Taylor Gatto Lectures

Bianca You Animal, Shut Up!

This was a nice informal lecture, opened with an anecdote he himself witnessed in school. He speaks of dictatorial Romania and Edward Mandell House.

He also mentions a PhD Thesis from Syracuse University called "Prosperous Illiterates" loaned to him by Pat Farenga which mentioned that "employees who read too well leave the job more quickly, request wage increases at the drop of a hat, score low on job satisfaction, engage in union activities, and make private use of company property. Illiterates on the other hand show more company loyalty, job satisfaction, strong work ethics, and high moral standards."

RE: John Taylor Gatto Lectures

a Short Angry History of Modern Schooling

This recording sounds like he's on helium for some reason.

In this lecture:
- Creation of adolescence was in the 19th century.
- Woodrow Wilson's quote on the two classes he foresaw in America's future which educational inequality would help bring about.
- Planned breeding was necessary to move evolution forward, schooling was to foster eugenics.
- It takes about 3 years to break kids according to Gatto's experience
- The introduction of American School into the orient has broken up 40 centuries of tradition, [...] and is working marked progress in Turkey and the Phillipenes. H.B. Wilson, 1916
- Bionomics, created in Indiana University, the why and how to produce a new evolutionary ruling class.
- Buck vs. Bell (1927), originating in Indiana, first example of eugenics in Western Civilization, cited by Nazi's at Nuremburg as precedent. Nazi's named their forced sterilization procedure the Indiana Procedure.

RE: John Taylor Gatto Lectures

a Study of the Elite Private Boarding Schools

I love that there is a green/blue screen of some kind with an island seascape in the background for some reason. It is such an odd video to actually watch. There is no audience except some camera men perhaps. Still, a great summary of his research on the education as designed for and by the upper class.

In this lecture:
- The Elite Private Boarding schools are the ones that produce a substantial chunk of our national leadership. "14" Principles are common throughout:
- 1. No kid should graduate without a theory of human nature from History, Philosophy, Theology, Literature, and Law,
- 2. Every graduate should have a strong experience with the "active" literacies: Writing & Public Speaking.
- 3. Insight into the major institutional forms, (courts, corporations, military) and the details of the ideas that drive them.
- 4. Repeated exercises into the forms of good manners and politeness.
- 5. Independent work.
- 6. Energetic physical sports are to confer grace onto the human presence, and practice in handling pain.
- 7. A complete theory of access to any workplace or person. (CEO's, governors, mayors)
- 8. Actual responsibility, deliver more than is asked for.
- 9. Arrival at a personal code of standards, production, behavior, and morality.
-10. Familiarity with the master creations in the Arts, to transcend the animal materiality.
-11. The power of accurate observation and recording.
-12. The ability to deal with challenges of all sorts, based upon knowledge of the individual.
-13. A habit of caution in reasoning to conclusions.
-14. Constant development and testing of judgments.

Commonest occupations in the US (at the time) will be (According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics):
- 1. Retail Sales Person
- 2. Registered Nurse
- 3. Cashier
- 4. General Office Clerk
- 5. Truck Driver
- 6. Manager
- 7. Janitors
- 8. Nurses aides, orderlies
- 9. Food counter and related
-10. Waiters & Waitresses

BTW, this website is actually a really interesting way to get a glimpse at our economy:
US Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook

John Taylor Gatto Lectures

Beyond Money

This lecture is a lot about generosity.

In this lecture:
- His dad managed a local dog biscuit company and his mother housed a ton of stray dogs.
- He mowed a widows lawn, forced by his mother, hated it, but eventually he came to love it.
- 70% of the world's lawyers are in the US.
- Money contains an internal contradiction, it robs things of their nature and cheapens them.
- Shared an anecdote about the qualitfy of human blood in places where it is free vs. paid for.
- US blood is the most expensive and lowest quality.
- The direct result of being told to love your neighbor is to despise him.

RE: John Taylor Gatto Lectures

the Education Trust

This was the lecture, part of which can be found opening with "How about this?", but this is the complete recording.

In this lecture:
- Ellwood P. Cubberley was the source of all myths about education. In Gatto's research was the most important person in education history in the US.
- Childhood had successfully been extended by 4 years, paraphrase from Cubberley
- 1839, Alexis de Tocqueville said "there is strictly speaking there is no adolescence"
- Shared a story of a 25 year old attorney in training who broke Gatto's sub-lease contract. Dad said "his son was only 25, and hadn't [he] ever changed his mind when he was 25"
- Explained why America became so different than Europe, quoting Edward Eggleston
- G. Stanley Hall, reinvented adolescence in 1904, according to Gatto, because Church was shrinking and school needed to take the place of Church. School was the creation of the dwindling American ministry.
- Germany proved in in 1820 that management of less intelligent people was easier.
- George Washington studied Trigonometry at 11 as his first subject.
- Andrew Jackson's presidency caused motivation for, and needed to end before, creating forced schooling.
- Gatto explained why corporate elites created funded schooling.
