RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

It was a different time.
I had a stick up my ass the size of Texas. About half a dozen former users who I could only describe as "edgy" (with quotation marks) noticed this. We got along just about as well as you might expect, which is to say not at all.
Things were reasonably calm, if not tense, for the first few months I was a moderator. There were disagreements, of a sort, between users who liked this site back when it was all dark, chaotic, and full of snark, and users who preferred the more lighthearted, optimistic, tender approach we were moving towards, and at the time it didn't look anywhere near as reconcilable as it was. I fell squarely in the latter camp, whereas the folks I didn't like flocked to the former. After one user too many complained about them standing in the way of progress, I snapped.
And by snapped I mean hit the majority of the active userbase with the banhammer, many of whom hadn't actually done (much of) anything wrong. I am not a smart man.
The administrators stepped in not long after and fixed everything, but the intention behind my actions was clear, and everybody kept their guard up for awhile thereafter. I took a break from being a mod for a few months after that, not that I had much of a choice in the matter. Now, I'm a completely different person.
(Or am I? *polishes banzweihander*)

Wow. I didn't know this forum had such a colorful, conflicted history. Sorry it drove you to a snapping point though.
But still… *Applauds you for discouraging the snarky users*. I think I prefer forums with users that fall on the latter camp you described. So if I make any good friends here, I shall thank you.

Yep. I permaban the occasional spambot when no one else is around to take care of it, but aside from that, I don't do anywhere near as much as I used to.
And the old SS wasn't all that bad... in small doses, anyway. That said, I am proud of how far we've come.

The old SS was pretty terrible, for me anyway. I couldn't stand it. I'm so glad it's dead, and I am grateful for the apocalypse.
Oh, I'm supposed to ask a question... erm... you said you think it was reconcilable... How so?

The passage of time ensured that a balance would emerge between the two. We've ostensibly shifted more to the "hugbox" side than the "edgy" side, but the blend is existent nonetheless: The more irreverent users were afraid that we'd become hypersensitive, but we aren't nowadays. Likewise, they've more or less stopped causing needless drama - even Duelix's recent appearance was good for some cheap laughs.
Yeah, we've got the Support & Psychology area for more feels-oriented topics, but there's also the wacky, zany, mildly-evocative-of-the-old-SS Lounge area. Speaking of which... I have some ideas for how we might improve upon that model, appeal to a wider range of people. Might discuss the logistics of it in a more private subforum.

For humanity to achieve its full potential, we must embrace what sets us apart from the animals: Wisdom. Philosophy. Conscience.
Because of this, we will never be whole until every person alive discards their primal tendencies, chief among them to kill, harm, or - to answer your question - eat members of their own species. Cannibalism is for those who foolishly believe they can in any way justify acting like a beast instead of a person... but there are worse kinds of people.
