RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

I'm fucking scared of my Algebra Regents

Especially considering it's common core.

For one, I'm still figuring out basic division, math isn't my strong suit, k? Second, I don't plan on getting a job at NASA or as a computer technician. I've spent almost six fucking years learning shit I never plan to use. RE: I'm fucking scared of my Algebra Regents

I need some serious advice from you guys, because I'm required to pass a test that's way out of my league. I just plan on being a musician or a package loader, maybe an explorer, I just need to know addition and subtraction, maybe multiplication for that stuff. I understand that I sound backwards and downright archaic, but we seriously need an education reform instead of spending trillions of dollars on fucking SR-71 Stealth Planes and M1A2 Abrams Tanks.

The SR-71 has been out of service for more than a decade and I don't think you can be an explorer this day seeing as we've basically mapped the entire world a dozen times over in all kinds of formats from basic geology to water table to thermal satellite imagery.

Just try Khan Academy, usually best for quick lessons with informative explanations.

This! In hs I failed trig first year I took it. Hated the class, because I hated the teacher I had. Went through some of the material on KA, retook the class, got >100% when I retook. Then I used KA to supplement my notes in Calc I and Calc II now that I'm in college. As. If it can help me get As in advanced math classes after I consistently got Cs and Bs before discovering KA in less advanced courses it'll probably help you a ton.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

Do you have any advice you could give here? For example, could you still pass a regents if you don't answer 2 or 3 questions?

RE: I'm fucking scared of my Algebra Regents

Man, there's a large written portion, which is the part I'm afraid of. Here's one of the questions: "Subtract 5x squared + 2x - 11 from 3x squared +8x - 7, Explain your answer". That may sound incredibly easy to a lot of you, but I have a severe math disability, which I'm hoping won't cripple me.

RE: I'm fucking scared of my Algebra Regents

That sounds basic to the point that I would have no idea how to "explain your answer" beyond "that's how subtraction works, you bloody paranoid test writer." However if you need a step by step:

1. Put the expressions in order
(3x^2 + 8x -7) - (5x^2 + 2x - 11)

2. It's been years since I had a math class where this needed explaining. I think it's called combining like terms but that may be something else. If labeling your steps isn't a requirement then don't bother with this lengthy waste of words.
(3x^2 - 5x^2) +
(8x - 2x) +
(-7 - (-11))

3. Evaluate.
3x^2 - 5x^2 = -2x^2
8x - 2x = 6x
-7 - (-11) = -7 + 11 = 4

4. Final answer:

-2x^2 + 6x + 4

I have no clue if they want more or less explanation than that though. I always found the requirement to show work to be... condescending. Especially when it's "solve the equation using this method," and that method is literally the worst method available for the equation, and it wouldn't even be difficult to come up with an equation where the method they want you to use is also the one that a reasonable person would. That just teaches that math is needlessly and arbitrarily hard, rather than a useful tool.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

Reading through all that makes me feel like I have a math disability... is a math disability actually a real thing though? It sounds like another convenient way to make people feel inferior...

Could you mention a specific topic you're struggling with? If not you might want to check out Khan Academy as others have suggested or perhaps Wolfram MathWorld.

I'm not sure. I honestly think it's taught better in other countries though, given how they outperform us.
