RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Hello!

My name's Shane, and I'm an eighteen year old in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
I'm currently in my last year of what Americans would probably call "High School" and I fucking hate it.
I hate having to wear the stupid uniform, I hate all the people in it, and I hate the teachers, and most importantly, I hate having to live in Northern Ireland.
Next year I'm going to the University of Birmingham to study Geology, in England.
I'm here because I need some help dealing with some of the stuff going down in school right now. I look forward to talking with you all.

Hello!

Hi, welcome to the forums. I haven't been active for a while now, but I'm making my way back.

What kind of things are going down with your school situation at present? And what has it been like overall?

Okay.....
I mentioned in another thread that I do A levels at school, meaning I only have 3 classes; Biology, Geology and Geography. As you can imagine, this leaves me with a lot of time out of class. About half of my day is made of "study periods."
What I've started doing on days were all my classes are in the morning, is going home. Take Wednesday's for example. I have 6 periods that day;
first two periods are both Geography.
Break
3rd period Biology
4th period study
Lunchtime, which lasts an hour.
5th period study
6th period study
On a day like this, I've been leaving school when Biology ends. And the head of my year group got wind of me going home instead of going to the study periods, so she decided to pull me out of class for it.
"Shane, do you have any excuse for not showing up at any of your study periods this week?"
Me: "I've been going home because I find that I can study more efficiently at home than on the study floor."
Her: "Why?"
Me: "Because the sound of the computers typing, the clock ticking, and the study warden constantly telling us to shush is distracting."
She sighs heavily.
Her: "If you feel that way, you can do a Friday detention this week and a Saturday morning detention in the new year."
So a few days later my mum gets a letter from someone addressing themselves as "Warden of the 6th form center" about how I've been getting detentions for skipping study periods. My mum laughed and says I'm too old to be getting detentions, because I'm legally an adult. Also, disciplining me won't change my mind. I will still feel that way about study periods.
I didn't go to the Friday detention that week, I skipped it, and then it was Christmas Break. I'm anxiously awaiting what will happen when I return next week.
