RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Punished for what I put on social media.

Ok, this happened a while ago.
Remember the holiday, "Columbus day"?
I made a facebook post saying "We should celebrate columbus day properly by enslaving and murdering people!" And then 2 hours after I posted it, I got a call to my house phone from the principal saying someone sent her screenshots of my "disturbing" status and I had to meet with her tomorrow and delete the status. I'm not facebook friends with any teachers and I'm still dying to know who sent her screenshots and why. I am facebook friends with someone who regularly jokes about shooting up schools, so what's so bad about my status? If they think I'M a threat, surely that person is the worst threat! My parents thought the whole thing was BS too ane my status was harmless. The meeting with the principal just was her telling me not to joke about that. (Ahh, yes. Because everyone is offended by everything.)
Yeah. I'm still butthurt about it. >:c

RE: Punished for what I put on social media.

Ah, the old "no mixing of business and personal, unless we do it and it lets us hurt you somehow."

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

The funny thing about teachers is, they can teach but there are loads who can't learn. The more obvious it is that they know very little, the more likely it is that they'll be an administrator. It sounds to me like your principal didn't get what you were satirizing.

Columbus Day is stupid. The guy didn't even land here, he landed in the West Indies. Let the Carribean and/or Cubans celebrate the man who ended up oppressing them.

Well, it IS accurate. However, the imbecile didn't understand. Gotta agree with you and your parents.

I also have a friend who is like that. He often takes selfies with pistols, and says that he and a friend of mibe could be like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.

RE: Punished for what I put on social media.

I doubt the principal here really cares about the post content or meaning. He or she surely gets the jab but almost certainly could care less either way. The public has this absurd idea that schools are somehow responsible for things students post online. For example, the NYTimes recently ran a story about how a certain high school had a problem with students "sexting". I realize it's not the same as Facebook but the ridiculous idea that a school should be held accountable for what the students do on their phones goes almost completely unquestioned. If students cyber bully each other or whatever it's considered the school's problem as if there's any possible way a school can or should control what students do via text or online. So what was the principal's purpose concerning this talk? Just to be able to document a course of action. Something was done in case someone tries to use this to go after the principal's job. With a school of around 1000 students a principal probably does this kind of thing around five times a day. It also includes calling teachers in for ticky tack student and parent complaints.

Side note: Columbus figured out how the trade winds work. His discovery, not of the New World, but of a way to predictably be able to negotiate eastward and westward ocean travel connected the continents and changed the world. Enjoy the day off. I do.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

I'm sure that's not Columbus day is for. In fact I believe it was meant to squeeze a bunch of cultural holidays into 1 package.

RE: Punished for what I put on social media.

It's obviously a sarcastic reference to how ridiculous it is that we celebrate someone who initiated genocide upon millions of people. It's not actually a threat at all, so you have your free speech in this matter. Screw her. Turns out one of the job requirements for accepting administrative positions at public schools is throwing common sense out of the window.

If Columbus' notes and those of the priest Bartolome las Casas are to be trusted, yes, Colombus did indeed commit genocide.

Quote:They ... brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks' bells. They willingly traded everything they owned... . They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features.... They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their spears are made of cane... . They would make fine servants.... With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want. -Columbus

And so the stage was set for the mighty to slaughter the weak...

Quote:There were 60,000 people living on this island, including the Indians; so that from 1494 to 1508, over 3,000,000 people had perished from war, slavery, and the mines. Who in future generations will believe this? I myself writing it as a knowledgeable eyewitness can hardly believe it.-las Casasquote]

What happened in between? Numerous atrocities, the sum total of which can only be referred to as genocide.

[quote]They attacked the towns and spared neither the children nor the aged nor pregnant women nor women in childbed, not only stabbing them and dismembering them but cutting them to pieces as if dealing with sheep in the slaughter house. They laid bets as to who, with one stroke of the sword, could split a man in two or could cut off his head or spill out his entrails with a single stroke of the pike. They took infants from their mothers' breasts, snatching them by the legs and pitching them headfirst against the crags or snatched them by the arms and threw them into the rivers, roaring with laughter and saying as the babies fell into the water, "Boil there, you offspring of the devil!" Other infants they put to the sword along with their mothers and anyone else who happened to be nearby. They made some low wide gallows on which the hanged victim's feet almost touched the ground, stringing up their victims in lots of thirteen, in memory of Our Redeemer and His twelve Apostles, then set burning wood at their feet and thus burned them alive. To others they attached straw or wrapped their whole bodies in straw and set them afire. With still others, all those they wanted to capture alive, they cut off their hands and hung them round the victim's neck, saying, "Go now, carry the message," meaning, Take the news to the Indians who have fled to the mountains. They usually dealt with the chieftains and nobles in the following way: they made a grid of rods which they placed on forked sticks, then lashed the victims to the grid and lighted a smoldering fire underneath, so that little by little, as those captives screamed in despair and torment, their souls would leave them....

After the wars and the killings had ended, when usually there survived only some boys, some women, and children, these survivors were distributed among the Christians to be slaves. The repartimiento or distribution was made according to the rank and importance of the Christian to whom the Indians were allocated, one of them being given thirty, another forty, still another, one or two hundred, and besides the rank of the Christian there was also to be considered in what favor he stood with the tyrant they called Governor. The pretext was that these allocated Indians were to be instructed in the articles of the Christian Faith. As if those Christians who were as a rule foolish and cruel and greedy and vicious could be caretakers of souls! And the care they took was to send the men to the mines to dig for gold, which is intolerable labor, and to send the women into the fields of the big ranches to hoe and till the land, work suitable for strong men. Nor to either the men or the women did they give any food except herbs and legumes, things of little substance. The milk in the breasts of the women with infants dried up and thus in a short while the infants perished. And since men and women were separated, there could be no marital relations. And the men died in the mines and the women died on the ranches from the same causes, exhaustion and hunger. And thus was depopulated that island which had been densely populated.-las Casas

He predicted the potential for genocide and it came to fruition. Notice the pronoun switch from we to they. Read it closely and see if you can find clues to his personal feelings about this. I know it's trendy to hate Columbus.

It makes sense that las Casas would use the pronoun they if he didn't actually participate in the genocide.

Tell me, who was the Spanish governor of the islands when the genocide was taking place? The atrocities las Casas wrote about were perpetrated by men who were under Columbus' order. In the long run, what you're going to find is that having a healthy dislike for Columbus isn't just a trend as people have realized what living under Columbus' rule was actually like for natives, who had their hands chopped off for refusing tribute and were slaughtered en masse by his men. The trend of whitewashing over Columbus' genocide is over in the information age. But I guess he was pretty merciful to take some of them in as slaves. Wink

In just two years under Columbus Governorship through murder, mutilation, being worked to death or suicide more than half the 250,000 Indians in Haiiti were dead

"Columbus not only sent the first slaves across the Atlantic, he sent more slaves than any other individual"

The administration at your school sounds overbearing.
For them to respond so promptly to ONE complaint, it seems like they are probably going to be impossible to deal with. I'd just do as they say for now tbh. Good luck.
