RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Hello!

Found the site a few days ago and thought it might be a good place to spend some time.

I'm a casual teacher and have been for nearly a year and a half, however, I cannot reconcile my personal values with controlling and coercing kids. I've felt this way for a very long time. I believe school is incredibly harmful and detrimental to both educational and personal development. This realisation took longer and was the result of considerable reading and learning about alternative approaches to education and how children flourish in such environments. As such I will no longer be working as a teacher in 6 weeks time.

Hello!

I'm headed to the US next year to continue an entrepreneurship program - Praxis. Basically a (better) alternative to college (though not restricted to non college applicants - I have my teaching degree) where you learn valuable skills while working with a business partner, being mentored and learning economics, history, tech and digital skills, business, history and entrepreneurship in an online component.

Even if you aren't interested in the program I think the blog is honestly one of the most valuable sources of wisdom online and has been consistently solid.

I'm also working on a pro unschooling / homeschooling website as well as some other projects but that's not operational as yet.

Hey Brad, welcome to SS!

In my most recent thread you asked me about my Abolish Compulsory Schooling movement, and then in this thread I'm seeing you want to work on a pro-unschooling/homeschooling project so I'd really like to peak your curiosity. Biggrin

I started off ACS by posting a thread here over a year ago to encourage the community on this forum to come together and actually do something about forced schooling. This forum prides itself for being anti-scool and we have come a long way since this forum's inception. We're doing a lot more than "just whining" about school now. Our discussions and content are more in-depth, philosophical, and expand to other areas that go hand-in-hand as to why school plainly sucks.

However, I wanted to do something more. I wanted to do something big that could grab everyone's attention on the internet whether they'd agree with our beliefs or not. And after the drama that ended after the summer of last year (it's a long story that I'd rather not explain) I decided to create Abolish Compulsory Schooling. We have several social media accounts and I take pride in it being a division per se of SS. Being here and a part of this community is what gave me the idea.

I haven't been able to get much done unfortunately, although I do want to change that immensely because anti-school does not get the recognition it deserves. Neither does School Survival. What I want is to enter both the movement and this community into the mainstream spotlight and achieve the movement's goals of ending forced schooling for good, thus making a revolutionary social impact on many grounds; and an impact that's for the better for all school-adverse people so we can do whatever we want to in life and leave those who actually care about school and like it deal with all of its problems.

Seven crappy hours of our lives.
