RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Why are schools not teaching Kids about Jamestown?

I am puzzled at why Jamestown is mostly ignored in schools. Why is that? Why is it not being taught? And the truth as well about the Landing , the Aftermath and Pocahontas. The Film gives Kids the wrong idea.

When I was in School they taught us about Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America (which is one of history biggest Lies). Then they went all the way 1620 and taught us about the Pilgrims and Plymouth rock.

It wasn't until I was in Middle School (7th grade) that I learned about Jamestown the Real American Founding and where our Roots actually begin and 13 years before Plymouth. And that Columbus actually never even landed on the American Continent a couple years later The truth about Jamestown: The Atrocities, starvation, etc,.

The 'Christoper Columbus discovered America' thing is totally false and one of history biggest misconception.

Christopher Columbus never discovered America (especially United state part) . He did not land on the continent or even come close. He landed in the Caribbean.

Also Columbus could not have discovered america anyway because there were Native Americans living here for hundreds of years.

It about time we started teaching Kids the correct history about Columbus and also The History & The Truth about The Jamestown Landing and Settlement. And most of all Pocahontas.

Jamestown is the real founding of the U.S and the original colony not Plymouth which is what I was taught in elementary school. the beginning or early years of Jamestown was sad and tragic but it still was the founding of the U.S or future or of the future U.s and can not be erased

RE: Why are schools not teaching Kids about Jamestown?

Hmm interesting, I always believed that Columbus founded America.
As far as we know, school neglects to teach us many important things.

Columbus just figured out how to capitalize on the New World. America isn't even named after him, it's named after the actual dude that found it: Amerigo Vespucci.

However, Columbus was the first to actually initiate contact between Europe and the New World albeit being totally unaware that he wasn't in India/Asia but rather a totally new continent(which is why it's named after Vespucci, who within a few years after Columbus, said "Dafuq this isn't Asia. We've found new land!") thus honoring him with the name of both continents(leaving Columbus shafted from the honor).

Historically speaking, the first to find America was probably the Norse(aka Vikings). Course they landed in some shitty part of what is now known as Canada and didn't stick around very long.

I'm quite certain that school isn't to blame if you thought Columbus founded America.

RE: Why are schools not teaching Kids about Jamestown?

I never said it did, my second sentence was not referring to Columbus nor America.

I actually knew without school that Christopher Columbus landed in the Caribbean, not on the continent. Books!

Yeah I only started learning about Jamestown in 8th grade. It was ignored before that.

RE: Why are schools not teaching Kids about Jamestown?

When I was in elementary school we went balls deep in to Jamestown. I live pretty close to the former colony so we took a field trip. I sort of remember merely glossing over Jamestown in high school. Overall the early settlement period was pretty neglected during my US history class, which was AP. Not sure if it was the teacher's fault or the curriculum. Probably the curriculum since it sounds like you guys experienced the same thing.

Most people don't even know Columbus committed genocide, since he seeded the extermination of millions of people in the Caribbean. Yet as children we celebrated him during this day by watching a cartoon which made him out to be heroic in school. Sure, some might argue that it's not appropriate for children, but we shouldn't be deluding them with false impressions of history either. They just might carry them in to adulthood, as some people have done. Basically my point is that in history classes they gloss over a lot of the important events in early American history.

My history teacher went pretty in-depth about Jamestown. Maybe it's the teachers, maybe it's the curriculum outside of Ohio (but I think Ohio is a Common Core state, or at least it used to be one).
