RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

If you want to pass school do exactly what the teachers tell you to do.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

It's even easier if you surpass what they expected you to do when they told you to do it. Then when you take your foot off the gas, even if your work declines below expectations, they might be willing to give you a boost.

I had a strict history teacher who was so used to my great essays, he practically stopped reading them in-depth and only skimmed em. Obviously led to good grades with the benefit of not having to put in as much work to get it.

Well, first of all why do you think you're failing? You can't figure out what to do next without first diagnosing exactly why you've gotten in to this position. Is it because you simply aren't interested in the work? Are you seriously trying but finding that it is too challenging? Has something been preventing you from having time to do the work?

RE: I'm failing the 9th grade....and it's not even funny

9th grade, right? That is supposed to happen, 9th and 11th are the supposed to be the toughest classes to pass through. I'm in 9th, and I understand, I've gotten from A-1s to B-2s and C-1s just as I stepped into this class. All I can say is you have to do your best.

As much as I know, syllabus of 9th includes what you've studied so far at 6th, 7th and 8th. Anything you have been confused with, and even if you are not, first of all find the books of these classes, and make important notes that you think can help you further ahead. 9th actually brushes up all those and provides you with an expanded form of it with a harder elimination system, so make sure you actually remember all that you have studied in those classes. Usually it is hard because kids usually forget things of their past classes when they get to the next. I didn't forget it, and that's what is helping me understand facts in a faster pace as compared to others.

And yeah, it is not important for the moment if you get good grades or not. What currently matters is the fact that you need to pass this class. Really, people might say that you could have done, but times have changed. If they were in this situation themselves, they would've done the same. I believe that if someone gets realllllly good marks in 9th, then they prefer spoonfed knowledge rather than self-explored and understood knowledge, because the syllabus of 9th is big enough that you can rarely, if ever, get a chance to understand something on your own. You don't wanna waste a year, do you? Anything can happen in a second, and a year has a looooooooot of seconds, so focus on passing somehow rather than getting good marks. Take help of cheating if you have to, you'll get the chance of understanding everything at 10th. Believe me, I was against cheating once, but one time cheating cannot corrupt someone if they are willing to stop the next time. Remember though, cheating is not the right way to prove yourself, so always remember that its only for emergencies (9th class counts)

Treat exams like a challenge, like exams have something you hold dear and the only way to get is to prove yourself by passing and scoring good marks. That's what will get you through.
