RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

National ID Cards

What does everybody here think about National ID Cards? You know, the ones with photographs, but this time, are mandatory?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_document

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_na...by_country

In most countries, when you turn 18 or 16 years of age, you're required to get an ID Card(photos are always mandatory, with no exceptions). Countries that have no national ID Card(optional or mandatory) include Australia, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, United States, and the United Kingdom.

A lot of public high schools in the States require an ID Card(with photo, and you usually have to carry it at all times), with usually no exceptions. Thankfully I no longer live in the States, so this is not worrying for me.

RE: National ID Cards

The US has driver licenses and Social Security.

Just cause no national ID card doesnt mean they dont ave a method of IDing a nation. Id prefer it over having to hand out my SSN number because I want cable TV or a bank accout (though there are ways around it because I believe they cant make it a mandatory req.)

I dont get the hype about IDs. Theres 7 billion+ people on Earth and like 300 million+ Americans and whatever million other pops. ID is kind of important as it saves time and its a quick way to legally ID yourself. A govt ID has its authority behind it to guarantee accurate information presented.

Well, photo ID cards are crazy, since what if a person is camerashy?

National ID Cards

What does everybody here think of the ID Cards that most AmeriKKKan and United KKKingdom high schools have, and sometimes require, even?

National ID Cards

We have them at my school but we never use them. Seems kind of pointless. I've had some teachers say you can use them to get student discounts and shit though.

National ID Cards

College IDs are far more useful. Can even use em to get discounts at participating retailers and restaurants.

You're using statist rhetoric and you disregard for people's personal preferences. People have the right to be camerashy.

You're using statist rhetoric and you disregard for people's personal preferences. People have the right to be camerashy.

It's not a facebook photo or a model show. It's a government ID to do legal shit. Anybody who sees it rarely gives a crap. You can't even smile.

So anybody saying their camerashy either needs a psychiatrist(considering how many electronic photo devices exist in the world) or are just bullshitting. Almost every building, especially banks have a video camera. You telling me that won't bother them? How would they feel walking into a store that has those cameras with the screen showing yourself on the security camera?

If they haven't thought about it, or not bothered by it, they're just bullshitting and their "camera shyness" is as much a psychological detriment as somebody who won't eat mushrooms because they're "icky"(as in they can eat it but they don't like it).

Not to mention it has nothing to do with cameras and photos but more to do with:
Quote:Psychiatrists say that the fear of getting photographed is linked to social phobia, where a person fears being judged by others

Thus arguing that national IDs are bad because people are camera shy is nonsense because it has nothing to do with the concept of IDing but the concept of the person just being damn scared of "being judged" regardless of where and why it's happening.

Are you trying to "ad hominem" to people who are camerashy, or are you justifying the authoritarian statist actions of countries like the US and the UK(I've been to the former, and believe me, it's a joke and a hypocrisy from the beginning). You realize that there's nothing wrong with being camerashy, even with the large amount of cameras we have, especially in the first world.

Just because a camerashy person is afraid of cameras, that doesn't mean he's/she's a mentally ill person that needs to see a psychiatrist. The camerashy person isn't harming anybody else or their property! It's like saying "Acrophobic people are crazy and need to see a psychiatrist since there are heights everywhere" or "Arachnophobic people are crazy and need to see a psychiatrist since there are spiders everywhere".

National ID Cards

You're arguing that because there exists camera shy people, national IDs are bad ideas. I'm arguing that camera shyness has nothing to do with national IDs and if a camera shy person can't weight the benefits of the ID with the benefits of their "shyness", they're quite likely suffering severly from a phobia of being judged and should probably seek mental assistance.

Plus I'm just as guilty of fudging my statements with bias as you are, considering your severe general distaste of the US.

If they intend to be a citizen of this country(or basically any country), they'll have to put up with the fact that they need to be photographed for their passport and driver license(if they decide to drive), along with whatever other ID they will need to get a photograph of(college and/or work).
