RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

In English, we're supposed to write a thing like the declaration of independence, and write something we think people are oppressed by. I' doing mine about school being a waste of time to most people (obviously) and so far I put a few things and a bunch of quotes...I'm not good at writing, especialy at school.

I'm not saying like,"I'm lazy, someone write this for me", but what else should I include or say about it, since it's pretty important?

RE: So we have this project...

Good for you! I hope you follow through with this. Mention somewhere that school needs to prove three things to justify its compulsory nature:

(1) That the information it claims to teach is necessary
(2) That it actually teaches the information in a lasting way
(3) That students do not possess the information prior to being taught and are unlikely to happen upon it on their own

Propose that school fails to demonstrate any of these things and therefore should not be compulsory.

That should sound sophisticated enough to give off the Declaration of Independence vibe. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

To comment more on what Aureate says: Boyinaband did a rap "Dont stay in School" centered on this topic. About what unnecessary stuff is being taught in school, and important stuff that isnt taught. Basically that certain elements, or most of school as we know it, shouldnt be compulsory.
You might find it inspirational for what you are going to write.

RE: So we have this project...

write something we think people are oppressed by

The tyranny of mandatory public schooling

The requirement that I write a paper attempting to inculcate me with a victim perspective is in itself oppression. My existence has to mean more that becoming a robot slave to echo the opinions of others.

Consider the generations of people who spent their formative years being told repeatedly to “Shut up, Sit down and Do what you are told”. This could explain the passivity of a populace whose culture and heritage are being intentionally destroyed by its own leaders.

People’s families have been destroyed such that they are reduced to searching for occasional meaningless sexual stimulation to escape the emptiness of a soulless corporate existence. The mechanical meaningless future being prepared for me by the social industrial processing of my youth will leave me empty, exploited, in debt, and lonely.

I understand that my value to society is as a component to be processed, worked, taxed, and disposed of when my usefulness is over. However, I have value to myself beyond what your social masters see. I intend to resist at every turn your attempt to make me compliant and buy into the slavery of social integration you have prepared.

I may have to live poor, in a rural area, on the fringe, or on the edge of survival, but I will live free.

Feel free to use the above.

Ditto!

Be careful, who knows the reaction you will get for writing about school being oppressive

The teacher said something like,"Of course,if you drop out of school, than how are you gonna get a job and be a good citizen?" or something like that in a mocking voice (at least to me).

And about the "I" stuff, we aren't allowed to useI,me,my,mine, ect. in it :|

>never went to school in 19th century
>ended up so rich he might as well have been using cash to wipe his ass and still have a surplus
>philanthropy helped create the modern public library system

Teachers are seriously stupid to actually believe that indoctirnated bullshit. Normally teachers are expected to be open-minded and progressive thinking, but I guess American teachers aren't commonly intelligent?(dat generalization)
