RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Windows 10 is a nice looking OS. It has it's flaws (hello, security!), but it looks really nice. I just downloaded it tonight, and I decided to review it.

EDGE: It's a decent browser. I was excited to try it when I got it on my PC. I thought it could be as good or even better than either of the browsers I have been actively using the last few months (Firefox and Chrome). Needless to say, it isn't as good as Chrome or Firefox (or Opera). It disappointed. Though it beats IE. It has a nice feature where you can write notes on the page, but I doubt I would ever use that (I have Notepad or Word to take notes).

Edge also looks nicer than Chrome and Firefox on Windows 10. No add-ons, though. I love Adblocker Plus on Chrome and Firefox, but I can't have it on Edge. I'll stick with Chrome.

START MENU: It's great. Once you eliminate the bullshit, it's great. I love it. Easy to use. Better than Windows 7 and definitely Windows 8/8.1.

SECURITY: Terrible. It's horrible. A child account sends too much info to their parents. Fortunately, I am the admin on my PC, so I don't have to worry about that. However, there are many other security problems. There is a thread all about this (http://forums.school-survival.net/showth...id=35734). I suggest reading that if you want more detail on Windows 10's security.

CORTANA: I can't say very much about Cortana. I don't have a microphone, so I've never tried it. I would pretty rarely use it even if I had a microphone (I rarely use Google Now on my phone or Siri on my iPad).

LOOKS: Outside of the new start menu, I don't like it. I love the looks of Windows 7. It also feels just too pixelated on my non-HD monitor. Windows 7 looks ALOT nicer on my monitor. Though on an HD monitor, it looks nice (I have used my stepdad's PC, and he has an HD monitor. Windows 10 looks nice on that monitor).

Verdict: If you are on Windows 7, it's not worth the upgrade. Especially with the security issues. If those are fixed, I would seriously consider upgrading to Windows 10. If you are on Windows 8 or 8.1, it's worth upgrading if the security issues don't bother you that much. The start menu is infinitely better than Windows 8/8.1. I have had a ton of experience with both (I have 2 laptops with Windows 8.1, and one previously had Windows 8).

If you will be forced to have a child account on Windows 10, DON'T UPGRADE!!! AT ALL!!!

My friend has it on his gaming PC, and even though it's an HD screen, all the text looks blurry, and we can't figure out a way to get it crisp like Win7/8/everything before that. Is the text crisp on your stepdad's PC?
