RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

How do homeschoolers and unschoolers get a job?

I know I've talked about this before, but I would like some report or study on how they managed to get a job, I honestly know nothing about job resume, skill, and how a business works, even though I've said in the past that I don't really like capitalism. But I need to know this, since alot of people kind of give up on unschooling or living their lives if they can't find a job without a high school diploma. And What employers think about the prestigious brand name universities according to U.S news, which a professor from Yale said that was the thing everyone goes for.

How do homeschoolers and unschoolers get a job?

Short answer: Pretty much the same range of ways traditional high school graduates get a job.

It depends on the job. For those that require or desire a high school diploma, you can get a GED or get a diploma from a registered private school like Beach High School or Pacific Sands Academy, or have your parents issue a homeschool diploma. Many skilled and unskilled jobs don't even care about diplomas -- they care about what you can do and your ability to show up and do it. For jobs that require or desire a college degree or other certificate, you can go to college as a homeschooler/unschooler, as large numbers of people do.

For most jobs, having some kind of experience helps a lot, as does having some references from people who know you. For some, having a non-school certificate of some kind is necessary or required.

There are so many options out there... but maybe the biggest question is what you might want to do.

RE: How do homeschoolers and unschoolers get a job?

If you intend to survive and start from scratch, it might help stowing the ideological biases away. Like how I believe that often, the proletariat couldnt give a shit about marxism, politics, or the evil bourgeois if they are too busy trying to survive. In which case they'll support whoever makes it easier for them to survive.

If you want to be an ideologue then thats your choice, but nature doesnt work with politics. Either do or dont.

Local jobs would be easiest to apply to. They usually arent sticklers for the whole resume interview tradition. The mere fact you show interest in applying generally means enough to work there. Pay and job may not be great, but you gotta start somewhere.

I looked at requirements for applying to jobs at some point. Never actually applied for any, but the vast majority of them didn't seem to care much for education stuff, only that the applicant already has several years of experience doing the same kind of job (where they're supposed to get that if everyone requires it, nobody knows).
