RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

How to afford my food.

I have been looking at soylent for food lately, i'm sick of eating my usual crap and going long times with no food a lot.

I brought the idea to my parents and my dad has known of my idea because we talk a lot and he just sat there quiet and my mom yelled at me about it saying shes not going to buy it for me.

I have problems with food because i feel sick a lot of times and i think this will really help me and its extremely healthy and cheap, where can i sign up for food assistance or something? im sick of eating complete crap and want to eat healthy.

RE: How to afford my food.

First of all, check in to whether or not you qualify for food stamps. If you're currently attending college, there's a good chance you -do not-, because college students are expected to eat Ramen and die young.

Second, if you don't qualify for food stamps there's still a high likelihood you can get assistance from local food banks. This is something you'll need to research on your own, as the specifics vary by location, but my family gets more than half of our food from food banks. Some of it is unhealthy garbage, and some of it is quite healthy. It helps out either way.

...and there's always dumpster diving. For real, you'd be shocked at what gets thrown away in America. Even if what you find isn't food, you can sell it and then get food if you don't mind getting a little dirty.

Oh yeah, and about Soylent, I wouldn't be so quick to jump on the bandwagon yet:

RE: How to afford my food.

I don't know how it ended up copying that link instead of the page I was actually on, but check it again. Soylent contains levels of lead and cadmium considered to be dangerous.

Get the blood test if you can in the future, have you noticed a pattern with any foods? If not, still, lot of people are intolerant to gluten. Since there's gluten in just about everything, you wouldn't even notice a pattern.

How to afford my food.

Well, my mom did say if i wanted it i would have to buy it. Time for a hunger strike Smile

I make 20$ a month, for 1,000 calories a day it would be 100$ a month. I will just have to do whatever for a while and not eat till i can afford it.

What about other kinds of nutrition drinks, like Ensure?

Also, what exactly are your food sensitivities, and are there some things you can tolerate eating?

RE: How to afford my food.

Soylent isn't all that cheap - the powder, according to the website is $2.00/400kCal with a subscription. For an average man, minimally you want 1600 calories (probably more like 2000), so that's $8/day or $56/week. As a comparison, I believe the maximum SNAP benefit is around $45/week. I spend around $25/week on groceries, but I am a ~100 pound vegetarian with no other food restrictions so I dunno.

Like xc said, are there specific things that are less likely to make you sick?

How to afford my food.

So are you planning to eat nothing but this Soylent stuff? How can that possibly be a balanced diet?

There's gotta be a way to figure out what your food intolerances actually are, or like 5 said, it could be gluten. What about dairy? Meat? All of those things?
