RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

1. You need to finish eating even if you're full.
2. Don't have sex, look at all these scary diseases you can get!
3. If you don't go to college, you'll end up working at McDonald's for the rest of your life.
4. This physical fitness test applies to every able-bodied kid your age across the country. If you can't pass it, you're unhealthy.
5. You're a bit quiet? That's bad! We need to break you out of your shell!
6. If you defend yourself, you're as bad as the aggressor.

1. If you don't get good grades, you will be flipping burgers for life!
2. Are you creative? Stop being creative!
3. Do you think differently? You are wrong.
4. Creationism is correct. Evolution is bullshit. (only applies to some U.S. states, I do not live in one of those states)

RE: "What's something we should stop teaching our kids?"

1. They are inferior to adults (where the praise because I said so came)

2. They don't know what love is (true but neither do most adults)

3. Unconditional obedience

4. School is more important than fun and happiness

5. Santa Claus is real (will cause damage once they learn the truth)

6. That they must become indoctrinated or go to hell.

7. Stop asking questions

8. Their worth lies in how much they please their parents

9. Money is everything

10. They will get married and have children later on in life.

11. They are loved unconditionally, until they make that one little mistake.

12. Compassion isn't everything

5 is not done by the schools, it is done by the parents.

Schools never say that if you don't become brainwashed, you go to hell. At least in my school district. Maybe that is the case in Sunday school/Christian schools, but I don't know as I go to a public school.

RE: "What's something we should stop teaching our kids?"

Elementary school said santa was real and I seem to remember getting a stern talking-to when I told someone that he wasn't, although the memory is fuzzy and it could just as well have been a family member. Additionally there was a girl in my art class last year (think she was 15-16) who insisted santa was real and argued it with other students. I can't imagine it had never come up before, which would mean no teacher ever cleared up her delusion.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

"What's something we should stop teaching our kids?"

These things need to definitely stopped being teach in school:
1. You should never question authority, and the police are the best thing to exist.
2. There are only 2 sides, Liberals and Conservatives, Democrat/Labour and Republican/Tory. (School really makes you fucking stupid and a sheep person) (KKKonservaLiberals/DemopubliKKKans/ToryLabour are the same shit with a different flavor anyway.)
3. Quit questioning other things, and the system in general.
4. White Briti$h/White AmeriKKKan history is the most important history in the world, and AmeriKKKa/the United KKKingdom is #1 in everything. The world revolves around those 2 countries, and will forever!
5. You should be patriotic of your own ethnicity and citizenship. (What the fuck? No one gets to choose their own ethnicity or nationality, so it's foolish to be proud of it) (P.S. George Carlin is the best!)
6. The only genocide in history was that of the Holocaust. (Ignores the European mass murders of Native Americans, the UKKK's harsh treatment of the Irish, Ru$$ia's ethnic cleansing of Circassians and much of the Caucasus, and Au$tralia's genocide of the Aborigines)

And also, everything previously described above by other users that I don't want to list.

It's funny, I remember my history teacher telling us that he wanted to teach us about the Armenian Genocide, but that it wasn't part of the curriculum and that we didn't have any time.
