RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I'm becoming a teacher

Well, not immediately, more like next year. I will be teaching English and German.

Any tips, guys? Anything you wish your teachers had done but they haven't? I am all ears. This forum has been really transformative for me, and it's important to hear from people who have constructive criticism to offer.

Yup. Aiming for assistant lecturer in college, but I'll have to enroll for a PhD for that in a couple of years.

Are you sure you don't want to become a school custodian? I hear they get paid more Wink

On a more serious note, I don't think there's any tips I could give you that you wouldn't already be aware of.

First thing you have to do is actually get hired.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Bad pay, union headaches, gubament headaches, dead-end job(seriously. I don't think becoming a teacher is good for the ambitious)

If you have the will and want, then go ahead. Otherwise it's practically a terrible job for anybody interested in career advancement.

As crappy as it is, there are lots of folks with degrees in education who can't land a teaching job.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Well it's a crappy job with low turnover because staying at least guarantees better returns than trying to shop around for another job unrelated to teaching. Something like that. I wouldn't know though cause I'm not a teacher.

Not American, guys. I'm from Eastern Europe.

Pay is still terribly shit, no advancement, you're basically one big fat joke.

Nevertheless, it's what I want to do. It's what I have always wanted to do, despite being constantly told what a terrible decision I'm making and how much my life will be a living, starving hell, and blah. Frankly, I couldn't give a shit. At this moment, it's the only thing that gives me a semblance of meaning.

No different in any country. Except maybe Luxembourg...cause they're all rich there.

They do get paid about 3000eur a month in Germany, Switzerland, etc etc.
Over here, you get paid 200eur.
Which is $250.

How's that for perspective.

I'm becoming a teacher

There was something I saw somewhere about teachers in some country (probably Korea), getting rich and famous by doing videos online or something... I mean, if it's what you want to do, might as well make some more $$ from it, if you can.

I'm becoming a teacher

I'm usually averse to stuff that makes people rich and famous xD
Plus, I'm not kidding myself, I know a lot of people default to teaching when they have no other job options, and I know life might end up being a big struggle against the Man, bordering on near poverty -- I'm suffering borderline poverty right now, so it can't get worse, right? At least then I'll be making a bit of money and feeling a bit more responsible for my life AND helping a kid or two (out of thirty) learn foreign languages.

Be the cool teacher lel. How do you plan on dealing with challenging the students or whatever? Like how do you plan on getting them interested in shit that is hard and potentially boring. Or if they're uninterested.
