[GOSS 3] Free Isles

The Free Isles, islands in the Sea of Creation, roughly halfway between The New Empire and The Islands of Three, are a world-renowned bastion of commerce. They are the largest centers of free trade in all of Cadsira. Not only that, but they are also the largest and most prosperous communities not to exist under the flag of any nation.

And they are a haven for shifty merchants, escaped servants, and cutthroat pirates.

The main port, St. Tyrone, lies on the northern tip of the westernmost of the two islands. The east side of the port is a district of docks, ships, and taverns, whereas the west is comprised mostly of often-burglarized residences and shops. Unless you venture south towards "Governor" Johnson's large, yet quaint estate, you won't find even a semblance of law and order in this rough-and-tumble town...

Which is just the way the patrons of the Slippery Eel Alehouse like it, and that is where our story begins...

(OOC: This thread is basically a place for shady or tough characters of the GoSS universe to chat amongst themselves in-character, until I devise some sort of storyline for it.)

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.

When Mark arrives at The Isles he looks around at his surroundings. It had been a short while since Mark has been out selling in other places. After what had happened between him and his business parter he kind of quit for a while but, now that he is feeling better he is back in business. He is prepared to bargain, defend himself from sneaky crooks, and find new items to sell. Who will be Mark's first customer?

A tall, bearded, peg-legged pirate who reeks of sea salt ambles up to Mark's new stand and gawks curiously at the merchandise.

Mark looks at the pirate's peg. "Looking for a new leg? I have all sorts of organs and body parts here." He shows the pirate the two legs at his store though becuase the pirate was well a pirate he tried to make it hard for the pirate to swap it away from him and run away.

The pirate remains silent, seemingly transfixed by the possibility of once again having an organic left leg.

A few moments later, he finishes his deliberation and suddenly places a huge bag of gold doubloons on the stand and points at one of the legs.

(OOC: I'm half-tempted to make Sharpie's comment canon, just because it perfectly captures the seedier, more disturbing aspects of the lawless Free Isles.)

"Sorry I don't take that currency." says Mark. Mark didn't sacrifice his own body parts to get some gold he had another thing in mind. "I do accept trash or vomit." He says.

"Do you have it?" asks Mark. Where Mark came from it was worth a lot.

Mark smiles, accepts it, and gives the pirate the leg. "Thank you for coming."
After this he picks up his stuff and moves to another spot to keep selling until he is satisfied.

The pirate walks away, in the opposite direction, in search of a nearby clinic where he can get the leg magically grafted on.

There isn't much traffic through the streets at this time of morning - there's more likely to be muggers about than customers.

[GOSS 3] Free Isles

Meanwhile, in Governor Johnson's estate, two individuals approach a lavish meeting room.

Man: Yes, yes, Mr. Dest, they're just inside here. They're eager to meet you.

Dest: I'm telling you, if that fool Valarius were actually there... or better yet, that stupid king...

Man: Don't worry about that. You did well. But don't take it from me.

The man opens the door and lets Mr. Dest peer inside. Six more individuals are sitting at a long table, waiting for the two men to enter. They do so. At the head of the table is Governor Johnson.

Johnson: Mistah Roy Dest. Mistah Seymour Adaverld. Please, come in.

The two men take their seats. Mr. Dest sits at the opposite end from the Governor, and Mr. Adaverld sits on his left-hand side.

Johnson: Mistah Dest, of course ya already met Seymour heya.

Mr. Adaverld nods.

Johnson: He was a formah leadah of da short-lived Sonah Hills mafia, he was. Next ta him we have Coor Syuu - she'sa disgraced Luvanist priest, don'tyaknow - and Rufus Lee King, our mastah infiltraytah an' sabbatoowah, y'knowwhaI'msayin?

Syuu: How doooo youuuu doooo?

King: It'll be a pleasure to work with you, Mr. Dest. A goddamn pleasure.

Johnson: On ya othah side we have my good friend Jerry Atric...

Mr. Atric, having dozed off, awakes at hearing his name, looking around in genuine confusion for about five seconds before meekly paying attention.

Johnson: ...and we also got Trahagdoo the Smelterator-

Trahagdoo: SMELTERATE THE VILLAGES

Johnson: ...ya'know, I danno what da hell he is-

Trahagdoo: SMELTERATE THE PEASANTS

Johnson: ...some big faiyah elemental or haaf-dragon-ting, but he doesn't burn da seat, so dat's good, anyway... then dere's Miss Hticc, talented mage from Arisyan or whateva ya callit, and Da New Empiya's own General Lee Spicken.

Hticc: Greetings.

Spicken: Nice weather we're having.

Johnson: And, acourse, dere's me - Govahnah Harry Johnson, rulah a dis little cornah of da Free Isles.

Everyone snickers as Johnson announces his name, but he doesn't seem to notice.

Dest: Umm... nice to meet you all, I guess? Anyway, about that job...

Johnson: Ya did good, kid. We knew Valarius wasn't ganna be dere, and wanted ta see how ya'd react. Ya did real good.

Adaverld: That's what I was trying to tell you. You were ordered to kill the head representative, and you carried out that order to the letter, even though it wasn't what you were expecting. You've more than proven you have a place in our organization.

Dest: And what is this organization?

Adaverld: We're The SS - Secret Society - and this is our forum.

Atric: We believe that we are the... *snorfle*... the reincarnations of a doomsday cult that conquered the world.

Hticc: Not this world, though - Cadsira has never existed under one solitary banner. We aim to change that.

Atric: It'sssss... th-the world that existed before. The one the Wastreans talk about in their churches and chapels and whatnot. We have reason to believe it did exist, and ceased existing after the Old Gods reset the universe. The Book of Fate implies that this only happened because the world was united under that cult's rule.

Hticc: But there are no gods that can stop us now.

Dest: Wow. That's a pretty hefty belief. So how much of the world have we conquered so far?

Syuu: Weeell...

King: ...that is to say...

Johnson: We haven't conquered any of it. Yet. Dis is it. So far. But we will!

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.
