RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

I'll go to trade school or apprenticeship instead of going to a traditional 4 year college which will likely leave me in less debt. Also it's better with my ethics and morals as a anarchist, since I don't want to contribute my sweat and brow to corporations or businesses that are manipulative and exploit the proletarian working class!

RE: Fuck it, I'm gonna be a blue collar worker.

There's certainly nothing wrong with attending a trade school in lieu of college. I think one of the big problems with the public school system in the US is that we are endlessly funneling people toward college from high school, when in fact it can serve that purpose while also providing people with the skills they need to immediately enter the workforce. In my county, there is a technical school which you can sign up for through your high school, and it takes 3 of your 7 class blocks. Every other day, students at qualifying schools are bused from their home school to the technical center to learn real skills that they can immediately apply to the job market, and they can even get internships through the technical center before they leave high school. Implementing similar programs around the nation could have the effect of normalizing trade schools in the eyes of students and directing much needed workers where the jobs are.

Have you thought about what trade you'd want to pick up?

Who am I? Who are YOU?

RE: Fuck it, I'm gonna be a blue collar worker.

Don't think you can take a solid blue collar career for granted. You got to be very smart and crafty to make your way in the blue collar world. Plus, you have to work hard as hell and you'll probably have to take so much shit that you'll look back at school like Happy Days. It's brutal out there and don't expect a mote

Don't expect a mote of compassion.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

When I hear people hating on corporations, I wonder if they only support sole proprietorship.

Plus corporations don't exist. A corporation is the name for a business that's considered a non-person entity for tax purposes, and legally required to have a board(as well as annual meetings).

You're just h8in a tax classification.

RE: Fuck it, I'm gonna be a blue collar worker.

I detect a lot of disdain toward working for others in your post. Maybe you should take up a trade, get experience in that field and start your own business with the money you make? You'll become another manipulator and exploiter of the proletarian class, something which you seem to resent, but at least you'll be filthy rich.

Well to be fairly honest for myself, I would rather not make my own business or run other people's buisnesses in the first place, Infact I would rather have a voluntary kind of workplace with no mandatory work hours and every vote counting, instead of their being a boss. I think in this system that I live in, you cannot truly be happy in this kind of situation where you have to sacrifice a certain amount of hours in your life to a person, I would like that, but I guess for now in order to make some sort of income I would rather do it in a blue collar fashion instead of sedentary cubicle office work. It's difficult, but there's ways I can manage around to it, As long as I'm payed enough worker satisfaction counts more for me.

Murk, why do you think you dwell so much on your future workplace?

Should I be worrying in the first place?

Well, it's hard to stop worrying about the things you worry about. I can't stop worrying about when my kid goes off to college, and various other things.

But sometimes worry takes over and prevents other thoughts to come through.

In this case, i think your worry about work prevents you from finding your passion.

I'm not sure if you're aware "blue-collar" work is just as competitive a field as "white-collar" jobs.

Just because you learn the job doesn't mean you'll suddenly get a job, especially if you've got a decently organized union in the area(which will detract any job you might be able to get) or lots of businesses involved in the field you want.

In the end, you WILL work for a business, and you WILL sacrifice time for a person who is your boss. It's harder to find work if customers can't trust you due to lack of reputation or whatever. References only go so far.

Happiness is subjective.

You can be the CEO of ExxonMobil or 3M and not be happy, or you can be a factory worker in a 3M factory and be completely happy with yourself
