RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Dang. Sounds like somebody can't leave well enough alone. Nope, they gotta force embarrassment and labels and whatnot on people who just don't want it.

The thing is, man and beast alike tend to metaphorically blame the wallflower instead of the dance, and boy there must be blame. When they see somebody not participating in a system, they assume that the person isn't working for the system, rather than the system not working for the non-participant.

RE: My school keeps labeling me! :(

If being considered the smart one is a label, I guess ive been labeled?

Had one principal though who ignored me because I wasnt "charismatic" enough. He would pick certain students that were best representative of school cause of academic work and stuff and despite me being wellknown for being smart he would skip me and even choose mediocore kids who just had "looks". Bah I ended up blowing that "uncharismatic" label to hell by giving a rousing speech for student govt (didnt win twice. Im sure the supervisor of the SGA was just rigging shit to get students he liked into positions and then play them like puppets. That dude was an asshole)

So that principal was an asshole too. I ignore him if I run into him at certain events. Isnt hard to miss either. Dude is tall as hell and very bald. Its hard to miss a tall bald white guy.

That must really suck, man. I apparently need a 504 because I'm not organized. I have autism, but I communicate with peers just fine and I don't have any tics or anything. Most of my friends didn't believe me when I told them I have autism. There are people who are less organized than me, but do they need a fucking 504? No. I'm going to fight to kill the 504 in March.

A 504 basically says you are special-needs.

Ever since first grade my school district told my parents that i didn't play with the kids or interact with them. They attempted to put LABELS on me multiple times but my mom wouldn't allow it. In fourth grade they put me in the "friendship club" It's where you stay in a room with other stupid kids and and the autistic kids and learn "social skills" that you've already been taught. It was bad so my mom took me out of it. Then after that they gave me an IQ test. I think the test was to label me even more.

Long story short today they tell my parents the same thing about how i am really shy and about how i may have Asperger syndrome. WTF? I INTERACT WITH THE KIDS IN MY CLASSROOM AND I'M GOOFY BUT I LIKE MY SPACE. THERE IS OTHER INTROVERTS IN MY CLASSES AND THEY DON'T GET LABELED! I had to talk with my mom and she said "oh they are just looking out for you they want you to succeed in middle school maybe its a difference in religion" I told her i don't like those people. I can create long lasting bonds with them and goof around but i don't want to get close.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? MY SCHOOL IS PUTTING LABELS ON MY ASS BECAUSE I DON'T PLAY WITH OTHER CHILDREN AND I PREFER TO WORK ALONE YET I INTERACT WITH PEOPLE JUST FINE? WHAT THE HECK?

Sorry for my bad grammar and anger in my posts but i'm really stressed about this and i feel like going to my teacher and just punching her.

Every time they do that they put a label on your head that you are a bad student this happen to me also and is a really bad situation for myself any teacher in school does this also to me even when i got enrolled in collage

You know about the quote button, right? [ quote ]*paste quote here, and remove spaces in the square brackets*[ /quote ]

It's important that you do not internalize any labels school or the teachers give you, even if you have an external appearance of agreeing with them. It's great that your parents are supporting you, and you might want to draw on that as much as you can. And on the off-chance that the labels given to you are correct...still don't internalize them. You can acknowledge someone is correct without agreeing with what they say.

The school might have good intentions for you, or they might be labeling you for their own purposes, but remember- the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I really hope that you are not at risk of being medicated.
Good luck Biggrin

Quote:I really hope that you are not at risk of being medicated.
There is no medication which is used to treat aspergers syndrome. Some of the symptoms of aspergers syndrome can be medicated for however, such as anxiety. If OP isn't anxious, depressed, or hyperactive, there's no reason to think they will want to medicate, and if they do attempt to medicate under those circumstances then OP should get their parents to get the opinion of their own psychiatrist, not affiliated with the school, to confirm diagnosis. If OPs school only has a psychologist, as is the case with most schools, there's no privilege to prescribe medications anyway. That would require a psychiatrist.

Sounds like they're trying really hard to put you in to a neat little box. Maybe you do have aspergers, maybe you don't, but if you're functioning acceptably enough in social situations then I can see how this would be problematic, especially if some of your peers catch wind of it and decide to ostracize you over the matter. Teenagers are very foolish creatures, you know.

Interesting how they smack the label of aspergers on to you when you don't want it, but nobody ever tried to help me at all in school when it was clear during many of my school years that I didn't interact with my classmates -at all- and would outright refuse to work in groups because I preferred to be alone.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

Different person here, but I told my best friends that I was autistic and they didn't believe me, comparing me to someone who is a stereotypical Aspie (I think he's an Aspie) in my grade. Pretty much that I was the most extroverted of the friend group. Didn't lose friends because of it, though.

I would not suggest doing that for most teens, though. Especially if they are extremely judgemental.
