RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Spread The cause! Post Stickies on the wall

Well I did something In the middle of night, that honestly quite frankly scared the living shit out of me, because virtually the town was dead at night, and I was restless and fidgeting due to me going to have to go to the gulags that later morning, and me just completely depressed and anxious in my battle to stay sane and happy in school, I just got a fat stack of sticky notes and I just wrote out my anger and resentment towards the system, something I always wanted to do. I scribbled out a bunch of quotes and words such as,

" Hey Teachers! School Is a prison break free!"
"School Is a prison break free!"
" Resist and Disobey The Police!"
" Down with the wage system!"

With me repeating these lines over and over again, I was satisfied, but terrified of doing something like this in front of an elementary school at night where the people have all settled in and all the owls and skunks arose. But I just couldn't bear with me just doing absolutely nothing and letting my life slowly drift away into madness. To some people who actually protest and go against the police, putting up a bunch of sticky notes on a school building is laughable, but to me this is breaking the law. I just quickly and furiously put up all the sticky notes on the walls and the flag pole and quickly dashed out due to fear of being caught. I came home panting and sweating from the rush and tension from my heart and the moistness and dampness in my clothes. I know this is minuscule and merely just a nuisance to the janitors Razz, but I encourage all Members to spread the word around and start disobedience with this simple gesture. And end the slogan with, by the students and spread them all over your local town and anywhere and start rallying up your students in your local schools. This is abstract form of protest, but this creates awareness hopefully and create again a culture of disobedience.

Also any Ideas and thoughts on how to actually implement and change school law policy that actually impact the students? In order to do that, we need to have some understanding of how the rules and the national education decision making works, please give me information and your anger and frustration.

That sounds like fun Biggrin

Maybe next time you can mass-print some links onto the notes. Hand-writing the messages sounds like a good way to vent though.

It's an interesting idea. Lisa and I have also discussed printing "quote cards" to hand out, that have quotes with some information on the back (links, etc) that might spark discussion about school.

Somehow, having a physical way to spread the word makes sense.

I'd highly advise, though, focusing on things that would spark discussion, vs. seem like mindless rebellion.

"Disobey the police" -- why, under most circumstances? There are certainly issues with police, but for the most part, it's not police that are running people's lives. In general, I think getting people to think about how to take charge of their lives in positive ways is a better message than conflict with authority.

"Down with the wage system!" -- as long as people can find work they like doing and find worth it, what's wrong with being paid for your work? I think the better message might be, that there are ways to succeed in life and earn a living that aren't so misery-inducing, and that school isn't necessarily helping people figure that out.

And, however prison-like school is, especially for those who don't want to be there, if other students don't see it that way, or see a viable means of breaking free, some different kind of message might be more effective.

But the basic idea is worth exploring further. Boyinaband's Don't Stay in School video has actually led to conversations with teachers and getting the attention of other students at school. Maybe a combination of some physical text with links, and more videos like that, and about how things can work instead, could make the difference that's so hard to find with conversation by itself.
