RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

[GOSS 3] League of Nations

King Benjamin is startled, but skeptical that the Luvanian government would sanction attack so quickly, and with so little provocation.

The Speaker, meanwhile, addresses Oxford.

Valarius: Your nation in particular has developed incredible technologies over the past few years - for instance, that messaging device you used a few minutes ago. We'll talk trade agreements later; my point is that we are better equipped than ever to find a way to fight the dragons on even footing. Dragonslayers may have been only a legend throughout our mythic history, but now we have a chance at training people to actually be the legend.

The King nods slowly, unsure of his countryman's words, as he considers what might have inspired an attack on Arisyan soil.

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.

RE: [GOSS 3] League of Nations

(Oxford rests his head in his hands, obviously dissapointed.)

I know exactly what happened, Magi. You see, the Messenger of the Strong, Ms. Deathbringer... Well, let's say that she is a genius on the battlefield, but her brain just turns off when she isn't on the battlefield. I know for a fact that she attacked you, and I also know for a fact that she didn't consult anyone else about it. If there's anything we can do to reimburse Arisyan and repay for the damages caused, please let me know.

Or... You could declare war. I really don't mind, as long as you make sure that bitch dies.-Mr. Oxford

(He doesn't take note of the Speaker's request because he's already said that the only way is to make peace.)

"A war ta' kill one person? I know dozens'a people who can do it, and will, for the right price."

The Wastrean delegation (and no doubt, everyone else) turns to face a woman in the corner of the room, near the minor delegations and on the opposite side from the League Custodians. She ambles towards the center and speaks again.

"Camile, of the Free Isles. 'Eard 'make sure that bitch dies' and thought I'd pitch in, ya'know. Mercenaries. You can hire 'em ta' do somethin' ten times's difficult, and they'll still do it."

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.

"No need for repayment. We are adept at repairing the damage done to our natural habitat, especially with what a dragon can do. However, I do have an idea in mind to give your Messenger a challenge to avoid such actions for some time. It involves a hidden artifact in the mountains to the North-West. Such a quest might serve to either benefit this Ms.Deathbringer...or lead to her death if she proves unworthy. It's certainly a greater and more valuable method than simply paying for her murder"

Kiki returns in cat form after writing the letter and putting it into the mail system. Hopefully the other representatives won't take too long to respond, they often had long discussions so getting a good quote from each one was probably going to take a while. On top of that the quotes also occasionally had to be edited so they didn't offend anyone. When Kiki sat down he didn't say much since he couldn't hear what they were saying while he was away so he decided to just listen and figure out what they were talking about now.

Hmm... This quest sounds promising... Do you know what artifact this is? Could it help with the dragons? If it can, then this Whatever-It-Is is our best chance. But either way, It'll let the Deathbringer bring death to things that are actually maybe sorta guilty. - Mr. Oxford

RE: [GOSS 3] League of Nations

"The artifact was created eons ago by one of the greatest Pywith magis to exist. He only revealed the existence of the artifact after right before his death. He called it the 'Dragon Crown'. We're unsure of its abilities, especially since getting anywhere near it has been impossible for decades. Not only has it been strewn with traps, barriers and camoflauge, the mountains themselves have become occupied by the deadliest of creatures. We believe the magical energy of the artifact beckoned them, then began to transform them into monstrosities. In fact this quest was one of the things I had planned on mentioning. If the various nations could contribute something like resources or even manpower, we may all discover what was created and what its purpose was."

Kiki: Being a country having supernatural citicenzs we could probably contribute the most to this quest in the manpower department. Any specific traits one who is going on this quest should have?

Being a reprisentitive Kiki obviously was not going to go so he planned on finding people fit for the quest The Great Mage was talking about and maybe find some good materials for it also.

[GOSS 3] League of Nations

(OOC: I'll stall and see if I can open up a side story in the meantime.)

A group of Wastrean representatives enter the room, having just arrived on the League island. King Benjamin and Speaker Valarius rise from their seats to greet them - as they exchange formalities, the Speaker hands them a scroll (a rough transcript of the past meeting). The representatives take their seats as the two rulers make their way back to Wastreu.

As they exit the building, the King and Speaker chat.

Valarius: That wasn't a bad first meeting. This new League may prove useful.

Benjamin: If you can believe it, it's not new. Like the Custodians said, it has merely recognized our sovereignty today; I believe it was originally created as a mediator between the warring city-states to the north of The New Empire. Now it seems their lands have fallen into disarray.

Valarius: So the League has invited all of these nations here in the hopes that they might sort out the conflict?

Benjamin: It's possible, but the civilized world is plagued by other problems at the moment. For instance, the Grand Magi's quest...

Valarius: Yes, yes, that. I'll send someone on it, I suppose. Hopefully someone our country won't miss.

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.

The League is... Hesitant. We need a change of plans. If they don't come to the Lady when times are good, they will during tragedy....

[GOSS 3] League of Nations

A Custodian announces that the sovereignty of Hansgroia has been recognized.

The Wastrean delegation welcomes the Hansgroian delegation to the main table. The representatives of the other warring city-states, sitting on the fringes of the main hall, look upon the new country's representatives with various glances of awe and contempt.

The Custodians, noticing this, assuage these disgruntled and shocked representatives that they, too, can be part of a recognized country if they can merely work out a peace agreement with one another.

[GOSS 3] League of Nations

As the representatives of the League of Nations discuss the addition of Hansgroia to the League, the legends of the Dragon Crown, and the threat of the dragons, a cloaked figure charges into the room. Before anyone can react, the figure runs up to the Wastrean delegation and plunges a knife into the head delegate's chest. He collapses onto the floor, quickly bleeding to death.

The League guards quickly seize the assassin, revealed to be a young man (also of Wastrean descent), before he has the opportunity to harm anyone else. Thrashing about, the assassin shouts "Long live the revolution!" in Wastese before he is hauled away, presumably to be jailed or executed by the Custodians.

By this time, the head delegate, a man of 46 and former member of the Wastreu House of Lords, is dead. The remainder of the delegation chatters fearfully between themselves in light of this sudden attack as a few other guards drag the body away.

[GOSS 3] League of Nations

OOC:

Alright, this game has been pretty dead for awhile, so let's make things interesting - I have a few ideas on how to do that:

#1) I propose we change the borders of the map (plus a few other areas) so that it looks like this:

That way, we can retcon in more of the continent in case we take over too much of the map... and at the very least, this gives us a bit more to explore.

#2) I propose we implement a point system for territorial expansion, since no one has taken the initiative to expand their borders.

Let's say we give everyone ten points right now, and one or two more points every week (depending on their country's size)... with these points, we'd be able to spend them on the following:

- Unclaimed land. Each point will grant your nation two hexes of your choosing, as long as they border land you've already claimed (or are oceanic islands within five hexes of land you've already claimed).
- Building settlements. Each point will grant your nation the ability to create a new town, the ability to turn an existing town into a city, or move your capital to a city of your choosing. (For instance, each nation currently has one capital and one port town. If you want to move your capital to that town, you'd have to spend two points - one to make it a city, one to change the capital - and you would then have a port capital and a city.)
- Conquering existing countries. If the owner if the country you are trying to conquer is currently inactive, AND if they have no more than two points more than you do (or if you're tied for points, or if you have more), AND if they have no more than five more hexes of land than you do (or if you're tied for hexes, or if you have more), then you can spend ten points to claim them as your territory - towns, cities, and all! Furthermore, if you also share a border with that country, the cost to invade them is reduced to six.
- (We could give points more uses later on.)

#3) I propose that you guys come up with proposals and story ideas - even if they're for other people, you can still spitball 'em and see if they stick.

Will anyone second these proposals?

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.

RE: [GOSS 3] League of Nations

Can I reset? And we should maybe do it from the cruel beginning. No knowledge of one another, no central council etc. Give us sometime to develop a backstory and develop our nation and introduce characters, then create a major plot arc that leads to contact (and throw some magical in there to explain why we suddenly become capable of understanding each others languages, as a certain part kf the plot arc).

Which can involve the dragon island. Perhaps it was dormant and the arc starts with a spreading rumor regarding some misunderstanding of an ancient civilizations writings which makes it believed the island holds a powerful artificat, whereas it actually contains a dangerous threat. It doesnt have to be discovered the same by each of us. Maybe it came as a dream to an adventerous spirirt, maybe it was an inscription discovered by a farmer and studied by the nation, maybe it was spread as a rumor to a bordering nation along the trade network. Maybe it was a convict who stole some old man's fancy book and realized it was a map of sorts to a great treasure.

[GOSS 3] League of Nations

As do I.

The current backstory is that the League existed as an independent party for a couple of centuries, but it was originally created to manage the political intrigue surrounding the various city-states that comprised what's now known as Disputed territory. After they began attacking and razing one another to the ground, the League recently opened its doors to Wastreu, Sonar Hills, The Islands of Three, Arisyan, and Luvania for the first time (ostensibly in the hopes of these foreign powers doing something to contain this conflict), and in addition, The New Empire and Hansgroia formed from the remnants of the southern city-states.

Wastreu and Sonar Hills would certainly have known of one another before the League opened, as would Luvania and Arisyan to a smaller degree (due to borders). It's also implied that ships from The Islands of Three and the Free Isles would have visited each of the other countries at various points of history (and it's possible that these other countries reciprocated, depending on their navies), and at this point in history, each of the countries are engaging in trade via the circumcontinental oceanic route we see on the map. (The reason for this route is that any ventures closer to the Dragon Island run a higher risk of dragon attacks, though it's implied that at least one scouting party has been to the island and back without being completely wiped out.)

This can all be gleaned from the map, from dialogue, and from information each of us gave. If you guys want to expand on this history, though, be my guest.

(Also, any thoughts on the map and point system proposals?)
