RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Help write, "A Message to Teens"
Xcriteria and I are working on content for the Catalyst Learning Network site (as you can see now, it is bare-bones) We're hoping for a launch within a week or so.
I'm having some difficulty writing the "message to teens," the page where we directly speak to young people who want to leave school, introduce them to the concept of Catalyst, and help them decide how to move forward.
What I realize I need is perspective.
So if you wanted to address other people who were having trouble or struggling in school, what would you say?
Anything goes. Give it a shot in this thread.

More background...assume people access Catalyst because they are looking for a way out of school. They want to see if there is any way they can satisfy their parents' expectations and still get out of the toxic school environment. What do you want them to know about the journey ahead?
Catalyst is/will be a "self-directed learning community." What do you think they need to know about pursuing their own interests and what they enjoy?

RE: Help write, "A Message to Teens"
You need to stand out, but you also need credibility. Here's a fun idea: telephone a selection of major colleges and describe to them, unembellished, a theoretical Catalyst student. Ask them whether they would accept the application of said student, and, if they are permitted to venture a guess, how that application would fare. Compile a written record of each call you make and display them prominently on the site, placing in boldface affirmative quotes from the discussions. Encourage college-aspiring teens and their parents to replicate the calls if they remain skeptical.
Though I do think it would improve your ethos tenfold if large universities responded well to this question, my motive in suggesting it is partly selfish. I read of a similar experiment conducted by Grace Llewellyn, author of the Teenage Liberation Handbook, and I would elate to see its results corroborated by someone less remote.
If you decide to realize this, do keep me posted. I am very eager to hear of your findings, positive or negative.

RE: Help write, "A Message to Teens"
That's really interesting and worthwhile..... But I am wondering...what would YOUR message to students be?

Dear Students
School is a toxic environment for us and if you hate it leave it and start homeschooling
