RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Rainbow Hi! I'm new around here...

Hi everyone Biggrin I am an almost-14-yr-old living in Southern NY. You can call me Lexi Smile I have no motivation to go to school at all. I get up in the morning angry and I don't stop being angry until about 2 AM when I get to go on the Internet and fool around.
I liked school until about 4th grade. That's when the homework picked up and the Common Core Grindteeth made its way into my life. Fu ANYWAY: I still didn't have too much of a problem until 7th grade. The freaking CC had taken complete control of the curriculum. We had to write chapter summaries of a stupid book and analyze each sentence until it made no sense. As an overanalytical person, English became hell for me.
By then, I had realized that everyone around me was a crazy, brainwashed conformist. Everyone. Even my best friend. So I fell back on my only friend who wasn't. She was pretty much the only one I talked to. We would sit together at lunch and talk nonchalantly about how we wished we could die before our next classes. I was diagnosed with severe depression but my parents refused to remove me from school. The depression got so bad that I didn't trust myself to be alone in the kitchen with all the knives.
Finally, in January, my parents allowed me to switch schools. I was going to a private school. At first I loved it. But then I realized that the money my parents were paying for "personalized learning" was only funding loads of homework. Meanwhile, dancing replaced the healing that the therapy wasn't giving me. I don't think a lot of people can say this, but dancing literally kept me alive.
My therapist has recently pointed out that when I'm on winter/spring/summer break or when it's a weekend, my depression and anxiety are pretty much gone. But when she sees me on weekdays, they magically reappear. Hmm. Jawdrop REALLY? Sarcasticclap I wonder why!
School is pretty much a prison. Whenever I'm there I want to EXPLODE! Thunder But of course when I try to say anything, I get yelled at, so I keep my mouth shut. Tapedshut Schoolwork and homework are unpaid labor. Students are forced slaves. So yeah. And when people say "You know, kids in Africa don't get educations. They would kill for yours!" I just want to SCREAM FOR HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS! UpsetTwistedRantingTripleevilMadEvilFuGrindteethBrickwallCensored so yeah.
Sorry that you had to read all that. Hiding but now you know a little bit more about me! Grouphug

Have you told your therapist that school is the reason for your depression? What do you think would happen if you did?

Oh, and I live in Africa. (South Africa). The schools here are a joke too... but in a different way I suppose. They want to make sure as many people pass as possible, so they lowered the standards so much that you only need like 40% overall to pass. Laugh So it's really just pretty pointless.

Laugh

Funny story, some university students are "occupying" the University of Cape Town and demanding that the statue of Cecil John Rhodes be removed because it's racist.

Nevermind that the statue and university have been there probably long before any of these people were even born, and they come along to this place and demand that this historical monument be removed and a bunch of other stuff... I mean, they could have gone to another university, but they chose that one... it's not like there are no others. Next they'll probably demand that someone invent a time machine so that they can go back in time and make it so racism never happened. People here are so demanding... it's a bit ridiculous.

Anyway, I'm all for people having more choice, as long as they're not imposing their will on anyone else.

Hi! I'm new around here...

Welcome!

Man we might in somewhat similar positions. Most of my school has conformed (including some of my best friends, and me to a small extent). My school district is one of the best in Ohio (and the high school was once rated as a top 10 public school in the USA by the Wall Street Journal) at producing diligent little slaves and getting students to conform.

I agree with you on your opinion on Common Core. It is bullshit. And your opinion on school.

schoolsux's countdown until school ends:

177 days until i get out of freshman year (aka hell)
1280 days until I get out of prison (aka school)

(as of november 28, 2016)

also Fu school

Hi! I'm new around here...

Welcome! I hated school too, even before Common Core. Really, even without CC, a lot of people start disliking school during middle and high school anyway! But it makes things worse for a lot of people.

If you'd like help talking to your parents about alternatives to school, maybe we can help. A lot of parents are very ill-informed about all the ways to learn and succeed. Here's one talk to check out: School is optional: Ken Danford at TEDxAmherstCollege -- lisafromjackson and I are developing an online version of the program Ken describes there.

Have any examples of that?

She knows that school caused it because she is the one who convinced my parents to let me switch schools. But she won't tell my parents to do anything else about it. Sorry, I guess I should have made that more clear.
