RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The "Think Nothing of It" Game

I had this idea a week back, and I decided I'd give it a whirl.

How do you play? Leave a post containing a genuine, thoughtful compliment to, well, anyone you want, really. (Bonus points if it's addressed to whomever is reading it.) Repeat as often as you desire.

What is the object of the game? There are two: Try to make each compliment you give more meaningful than the last, and aim for having a post with the fewest thanks. (The easiest way to accomplish the latter is simply to thank everyone else's posts.)

Why? Admiration and humility are refreshing to see in a world that accentuates the negative...plus, I figure it might be fun to artificially inflate everyone's thanks counts Razz

I'll start: It's kind of you to read this and at least consider playing Biggrin

RE: The "Think Nothing of It" Game

No, it wasn't. Feel free to do whatever after this, but I want to play before you close it.

DoA, there have been dark times for this forum, and I won't deny that you played a role in that. But, looking back at it, I understand why you did the things you did, and most of us acted immaturely in response to that. Plus, you've owned up to your mistakes and continue to be a valued member after that, and that in itself is very admirable. In summary, I'm not sure if other members have put the past behind, but I want to explicitly say that I have.

Hansgrohe... I wish I had half the passion that you have, man. Like in that hangout about Catalyst, not only were you really animated when you talked, but you had a number of great ideas. It's honestly awe inspiring how much energy you put into this. Whatever you're doing, keep doing it. It works.

Anything else... Oh, I've listed xcriteria as my role model several times now... I believe that's about it!

Thank you. That means a lot to me - both the compliment and the encouragement.

Subb, I'd go as far as to say you're the glue that holds the forums together, or at least part of that glue - when you-know-who scared you away last summer, I didn't show it, but I was crushed. We made it past those dark times and you're still here, and I can't express how glad I am to see that.

Thanks Subb, I seriously appreciate all the compliments! Smile

If I had to thank anyone, I'd say xcriteria for all the posting he's done over the past 10 years, which have probably been some of the most meaningful this community has ever seen. It's finally a breath of fresh air to see SS taking off on Facebook, and starting discussion among many people. We haven't had a stable forum like this in years.

I'll also thank Mobb Deep, Ice Cube, Nas, and a bunch of other hip hop artists I listen to; the music has helped me get through crab-ass days in school, and has helped extend my vision. A lot of my passion comes from 1990s hip hop albums, which gives me such a drive.

But really, thanks to everyone for being a meaningful and valuable member. Brainiac, DoA, Night, Sharpie, LadyKira, etc; School Survival is my forum, I'll hold it down for years to come.

I can count the number of good things I have to say about Facebook on one hand, but I am also grateful to xcriteria for helping us have more of a presence on that site. Lisafromjackson, too - "Voices of School Survival" is an amazing idea, and I'm glad it's worked out so well so far. In fact, everyone who's helped make SS recognizable deserves a round of applause, or a hug, or at least a pat on the back.
