RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: Review of Minecraft...curious about opinions!

I played minecraft back in the alpha days and consider myself semi-knowledgeable, so let's see.

None of the facts are false. Some of the opinions are troubling.

From the "normal" point of view, minecraft can seem very boring, but it's also possible to become engrossed and derive a lot of fun from it (not "addicted." If you are addicted you aren't actually getting enjoyment.). However, on that front, it seems to be mandating what it's OK to find interesting. Fuck that. This also from somebody who "played D&D." Apparently having fun needs to be simplified and dumbed down? No.

The point about the youtubers is very true. I fell into that for a while, and then I got bored of it. I don't know what to do with someone who doesn't, though.

Quote:All this for a game that looks like it was created in 1986. I have been told that simplicity is the key to Minecraft's success. If that's the case, I'm gonna create my own video game called SPOTCRAFT, and it'll just be a bunch of fucking spots on the screen, and I'll be a zillionaire.

Congratulations! You can't tell the difference between a game and a movie! You are a moron!

Quote:Open-source stuff is great if you happen to be an 18-year-old who is WAY TOO OLD to be playing Minecraft.

Confirmed moron. Maybe if our technology education was better than "IT'S EEEVIL, NEVER USE IT"-style technophobic drivel, people would know how to tell these phony sites at a younger age (like I did, because my parents aren't stuck in the fucking dark ages.) Again with the "you can't enjoy x based on your age." I guess from this person's point of view I should off myself because I wanted to learn some programming before becoming an "adult" and having that robot stick a goddamn "NO FUN ALLOWED" sign in my face? And after that daring to enjoy the same games I did before. Oh, the humanity!

Hey, fool, maybe your kids are bored of the vanilla game and that's why they watch all these youtube videos you hate. Wait, you comprehending that would imply you are capable of understanding logic.

My review of this reviewer is that he should insert a mace into each of his eyes and stuff a cactus up his ass.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

Review of Minecraft...curious about opinions!

I'm assuming that this is a work of satire, or at least isn't completely serious. Regardless, here's my review of the review. Let's break it down section by section:

The Theme Song: Reviewer complains about his children.

The Mythology: Reviewer seems to have something against small children (and Swedes).

Game Format: Visual correction needed - reviewer cannot tell difference between LEGO bricks and perfect cubes. Complains about children again. Falls into reductio ad 9/11. Complains about his children (and Swedes) once more.

Characters: Reviewer makes moral judgments about mobs on the basis of their hostility towards the player. Admits that, as a former D&D player, he has no right to criticize the game's jargon...and does so anyway.

Pros: Reviewer can't keep his shit together long enough to make his praise sound at least somewhat genuine.

Cons: Reviewer is apparently unfamiliar with the concept of Let's Plays, justifies his ignorance with appeals to the stupidity of children. (Conceivable that reviewer does not like children.) Has apparently not stopped to teach his kids Internet safety. Reveals irrational fear of the NSA. Reveals irrational discrimination against older Minecraft players. Reveals irrational desire for all game companies to be like Valve. Reveals perfectly rational hatred of Xbox (provided he's talking about the Xbox One, of course). Cannot differentiate between two dimensions and three dimensions. Paraphrases Bender. Reveals perfectly rational hatred of Call of Duty.

Conclusion: *shrugs* I don't know.

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.

That article has to be a satire.

I personally think minecraft gets way too much hype than it deserves, I can see why some people like to play it, it just doesn't appeal to me
As with so many other fandoms, there's the people who would try to strangle you if didn't rate the game a 10/10.

U stopid fcuker. Munecraft iS thr bezt game of al tiMe. I bet u play Call of Dooty!!1!1
(I don't even like CoD)

When I do play minecraft, I usually play a very heavily modded version

RE: Review of Minecraft...curious about opinions!

I'm partially convinced that it's partially satire...or at least the writer is an idiot who shouldn't be covering video games...

Refutation Below(tl-dr down further):

tl-dr; the guy is totally clueless and has no idea wtf he is talking about, if it's not satire then this guy should serriously just stop writing on video games....because this guy is clueless about games...

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

That website looks like it's making fun of those video game review websites (like Plugged In) that parents often look up that says things like "Halo is an extremely violent game" and other crap like that.

People who think that Halo deserves a M rating need to play Dead Space
