RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Sad Sorry to blow our ideas out of the water, but...

(03-06-2015 10:24 AM)Hansgrohe Wrote:  The problem with your mom's suggestion is that it's essentially the same problem anyway... the whole factory model system of doing things; basically, categorizing and such. It's not really going to be better.

Yes, like most people here, I will agree that the factory model needs to get thrown in the trash. But unfortunately, that is not going to happen any time soon, it may not happen even within our children's lifetime. And considering how most people view education reform (muh test scores, muh funding) I don't think that we will get pub way about this until a very long time.

That will be a very good long-term goal that can be passed down like a baton. I personally view this issue like slavery, yes it will eventually go away but we are in the 1700s if we are using the slavery analogy. I think we need to focus some of our efforts into other education related issues that are more likely to end up in our favor. (Like repealing common core or NCLB)

Or maybe a better use of energy would be to inform people of alternatives to school so that more people opt out entirely.

Or maybe we do both at the same time. I've always felt that my alternative school, whatever form it took, would double as an escape hatch for kids, and political action itself...showing what CAN happen if we take fear out of the school equation.

RE: Sorry to blow our ideas out of the water, but...

We could pass a resolution in Congress to ignore the issue. Then some states and secede and we can start a civil war. Then the president, by this time a tall skinny bearded man with a nice top hat, can pass a proclamaition of emancipation. Once war is over though, this unfortunate gets shot in the head while watching the Superbowl.

Yeah, we need to work on changing factory-model mainstream schools in whatever ways are possible, but also be aware of, and promote, alternatives that exist now, and have existed for decades. (But more and more people are choosing them.)

Here's just one example:

Watch on YouTube

And there are others at http://alternativestoschool.com and http://educationrevolution.org

So it's happening in our lifetime, for some. And it can for even more. And yet, for many others, they're stuck, but some schools can change in the short term, and for others, why must the horror last for more generations?

Because the public overall are ignorant of the alternatives and they tend to be shunned

And? In certain states the public doesn't like gay couples. Does that mean that we shouldn't try and stop that? Does that mean that we should deny them rights?

Also your argument uses bandwagon as an attempt to argue your point, which in itself does not act as support for your thesis; furthermore you fail to provide any support for your thesis with your only defense being bandwagon with "The public is in support therefore it would be useless to argue against it." Therefore your statement in itself, and the conslusions, are false becuase of a lack of evidence and proof and the only support to your thesis being a logical fallacy. Furthermore keep in mind that since you are the one making the claim you have the Burden of proof, in which you fail to provide any.

Different ideas from different people.

That's the way it has to be.

I'm saying that we may be too optimistic for removing factory-model schooling in the near future. I do predict that it will go away but that isn't going to happm anytime soon.

Or I'm just being too pessimistic

RE: Sorry to blow our ideas out of the water, but...

It's entrenched. But who cares? You shout for what you believe in. The Berlin Wall came down. The Soviet Union collapsed. Gays are getting married in Alabama. Things change. This website has an odd way of attracting people who seem to think they're going to play a pivotal role in something substantial. I think that's like a geek thing or something. Like people who think they're going to make a living off "gaming" or whatever.

It's good to stand up for what you believe in but there's no turning the tide. No matter how hard you fight you're not going to change anything. The only good reason to fight for change is that you enjoy fighting for change. It's all going to end up in the same place with or without you.

And no one poster on here can tell anyone else what their ultimate political goal should be. Personally, I want to completely abolish public schools. Others aren't on board with that. If it happens or doesn't happen it has nothing to do with me.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

I'm on board, Cancer.

If it's any consolation to the rest of you, though, change is not impossible nor inevitable - it just requires ordinary people doing unordinary things in extraordinary circumstances. We can't choose what those circumstances will be, but we can at least try to put ourselves in a position to beat the odds and play a part in putting an end to school-as-usual.
