RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

I'm not the one claiming I have anything to offer. I don't.

I'm saying that I don't think you do either. You're selling something. That invites scrutiny.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

RE: Discusson series: WHAT in the WORLD is going on?

Scrutinize away. Reminds me of my dad growling about something in the news and intoning, "Something's gotta be done!"

I'll repost my questions....

How are you helping? (Well you have already said that you're not. So ok...)

What do you think would help the kids here?

Why aren't you doing that?

Scrutiny is fine, but we do have something to offer. In short, it's helping school-averse learners pursue interest-based, life-relevant learning beyond school-as-usual; and being an ally for those who want to pursue leaving school early and taking charge of their life.

I think steering the kids away from Internet scam artists pretending to have solutions would help the kids here. So that's what I've done.

Yes, but besides that, what do you think should be done?

On second thought, I think all the kids on here should give me $20. That would help.

They should send me $20. How long do you want to play this stupid game?

Hmmm. I'll try again. To you think it is worthwhile to try and develop strategies to get kids out of situations where they are miserable and have no control?

Ok. $20 from multiple other people would help a lot of people here. Let's all start crowdfunding campaigns and explain why we're looking for help. It's free -- anyone can do it.

I'm serious!

- If you have a specific value proposition, or a reason for asking, that's great. Explain it. "It'll help out" is pretty vague. If you have needs or wants, explain those in some detail. That's how it works.

- Would you offer to get on 16 hours of hangouts with a set of interested people for a fee ($20, $100, or whatever) and facilitate discussion about making sense of the world?

- Are you going to assemble a team (or be on a team) who will talk to their parents about quitting school and taking another approach to learning?

- Are you going to spend hours tutoring them on subjects they're interested in without getting distracted?

Maybe someone will pay you.

It's still possible to do these kinds of free, especially when people don't have lots of money to spend. But you're working for your paycheck, so you have limited time.

I'm minimizing my amount of unrelated work, because I want to earn a living helping school-averse learners learn beyond school.

Do you have a better idea for how to go about that goal, or disagree with it?

That actually made me wonder something. Wouldn't it be best to record these and adapt the output into something?

I'd like to help as many people as possible learn about making sense of the world. But there's still the question of how to earn a living doing this kind of work outside of the walls of a factory-model school.

RE: Discusson series: WHAT in the WORLD is going on?

Hmmm. See, I'm trying to figure this out and I can't seem to let it go. I'm in a house with this little terrier who is obsessed with a sock he keeps pulling on, and he is my role model right now. See, we're offering two 2-hour sessions a week for four weeks....concentrated time where with motivated participants we can get a lot done, examining ourselves, what's happening in the world, and who we want to be.

Four hours a week is probably too much of a commitment to expect from kids, so let's say two.

With five participants we would get $100 which honestly would probably go into advertising on Facebook for Catalyst or maybe a designer making us a simple logo.

Still, if we only do the two-hour-a-week program, that's $6.25/hr (xcriteria, check my math, willya?) If it was for the money then fuggedaboudit. It is mainly to get participants who are committed to the process.

Are we qualified?

Isn't that for the market to decide?

Have you read about Catalyst?

Are you interested in solutions?

Or are you happy to run off and be passive-aggressive in other threads?
