RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Bulletproof vest

With all the shootings and stabbings, I think it's a good idea to wear a bullet- and stabproof vest. I have searched for one on Google and prices range from ~€100 to ~€3000. I will try to acquire one. What do you think?

Bulletproof vest

You probably won't need one since you're not American lol

I'd love to see people's reactions to you walking around your school wearing that though.

RE: Bulletproof vest

They bulge out, they can see it under your clothes

Many bullet-proof vests can only stop 9mm bullets (the bullet used in most pistols) they are unlikely to stop a 5.56 NATO (AR/M16/M4 round) or a 7.62x39 (AK round), and they are unlikely to stop a knife. (From the ones I seen).

I believe in active defensive (i.e. A perfectly sane guy with a SMG to stop a shooter) would work better on a school shooter

In the United States, there is was this one attempted shooting at a college, the shooter was stopped when two students managed to get shotguns out of their car and the delt with the shooter

RE: Bulletproof vest

For one, thinner vests mean lower protection. The common degree aimed for js often resisting a 9mm, which is most common for the most part. Anything bigger and heavier will require a greater plate(and a vest is actually strong fabric holding a steel plate in the center) thus larger vest.

Two, Id rather call them bulletresistant vests because they are only temporary protection meant to just prevent a bullet from penetrating and causing open wound problems. The energy of the impact still hurts you. Its not uncommon for people to suffer broken ribs and internal bleeding from the impact.

Id rather recommend investing in evasive techniques and self-defense in the form of converting most mundane nearby objects into lethal weapons(btw a newspaper can be made into a very effective blunt weapon).

Its a waste of money if you dont have the support backing you, like cops or soldiers.

The knifeproof ones cant stop bullets but how they work is basically like medieval armor. Plates or layers of metal that prevent the penetration of a knife, and can protect against slashes as well as deflect blunt force strikes. Course if they start using bigger and heavier blunt tools like a pipe than the armor wont be of much help sjnce the energy will still be absorbed mostly by your body.

Bullet vests can also work to some degree against knives, but that depends on thickness. Ive seen the difficulty in cutting kevlar, but if they stab then the protection decreases because itd pierce the kevlar.

In any case, best tactic against a knife is distance. Blades are dangerous close up and you either need sufficient protection or a weapon to use at distance(or a bigger blade like if a criminal broke into my house and threatened me with a switchblade, Id grab my gladius which is not only longer but gut-busting thicker). Even then no guarantee you wont get sliced.

Bulletproof vest

A vest with a decent-sized plate could stop even my sized knife (it's a K-Bar)

Yet a decent sized plate means a vest that you can't exactly hide.

"Hey your torso looks bigger!"
"Yeh I was working out like Schwarzenegger"

Not to mention the plate only covers the vital chest portion like heart and lung. The rest of the vest isn't embed with plates(though I believe some vests are actually sold with multiple plates. They got this thing called dragon skin or something, a company that makes vests, and it's got little round overlapping plates of steel throughout the vest. I believe they're mainly for knives, but I'd have to double check)

From the vest I looked at, it was a steel plate at the heart area, and the rest of the plates look like it was made of hardened plastic

I can't wait for mass produced spider silk. I've read it's significantly stronger than Kevlar. They say it's pretty much on par with steel in strength, yet a lot lighter.

RE: Bulletproof vest

If you're ever in a shooting, you might wish you'd worn a vest, but wearing one is really a disproportionate pain in the ass compared with the likelihood of you actually being involved in a shooting. You'd do better to learn defense -- how to find cover and concealment -- and the fitness to escape a situation.

Plus even if got shot, it would hurt like hell and you'd still need a doctor.

The vest let's you live longer with pretty much same amount of pain, but less mess.

RE: Bulletproof vest

Real life body armor is not like you see in the movies, big rounds can go through them, so can knives, and if you do get shot, it probably going to break your rib

Worst would be a collapsed lung, caused by a rib fracture.
Or if rib fractures and pierces the heart.

So you're not invincible.
