RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

What the title says. What are things that you see a lot of people struggle with (or an issue that's frequently advertised, for example) that you have never experienced?

This one's a pretty big one (no pun): weight. Ever since I hit a growth spurt I've never really struggled with weight. I remember I used to be chubby circa 7th grade and looking at the photos with the double chin and all, but that's well in the past. I've had 0 problems with weight ever since... in fact last summer I lost my belly fat as well. I'll admit, seeing the commercials with all these weight loss programs makes me very glad that I am skinny (thanks to genetics and puberty), and the fact that I'm pretty competent diet and physical activity wise is another plus.

Being alone. I hear lots of people complain about it but i rarely feel it and definitely don't understand why it bothers others so much.

Being human.
Luckily Ive suffered enlightenment and soon shall shed this corporeal form for a superior state of conscious being.

I guess being in America means having the luxury of excess while much of the world suffers from meeting necessity.

I always felt like I have some kind of immunity to being bullied. It never really bothers me. It just doesn't. Maybe because most of the "bullies" I come across are dumbshits that think I'm going to be offended when I'm called a faggot rather than actually taking time to learn how to personalize insults.

I've never struggled with my weight either. Definitely genetics since I don't eat healthy or exercise.

I have weight but I've never been too worried. So my self-confidence + self-esteem are pretty high up there.

I like to think that despite being the only fat guy in tango class, the fact I'm confident enough to learn to dance and have no worry about my weight means those skinny folk who have an issue with it can kiss ma fat dancing ass.

Worst case scenario I can put on the gaze of a killer and give the people annoying me this serious death stare that drills into their very soul. Tends to shut em up and leave me laughing. Mainly because I'm actually a pretty nice fella(sprinkled with some meaningless cynical misanthropy).

I never understood why it's so hard for people to say "I'm sorry" - to me, the only difficult thing about apologizing is enduring whatever has compelled me to seek forgiveness in the first place.

Aside from not worrying about gaining weight, I really can't think of anything else that comes easier to me than it does to other people. In fact, it's usually the other way around - I struggle with a lot of stuff society takes for granted.

I say sorry pretty often. Not during conversation or anything, but usually when making risky manuveurs or potential steps that block another persons path or put them in a tight spot temprorarily. If they arent assholes, it helps keep things calm by not making me look like an asshole. People just walk too slow for me.

Weight.
I feel like one of the only people in the whole world who is trying to gain weight, (through fat and muscle, I bench press every day after school). I'm around 200 pounds now.

With school, I find history and geography to be very easy to me

Not being me.
Self-esteem and things like that.
Extroversion, I suppose
Drug/alcohol dependency.
Managing various relationships and/or struggling in that great mythical search for The One.
Caring too deeply about others.
Physical conditioning.

Is that really the only exercise you do? If it is so, I must admit I find that highly amusing.

Speaking of which, that's another one - exercise. I can do that stuff pretty damn easily, and a lot of it. Then again, I have a pretty awesome body that I didn't know was quite athletic till last summer.

Picking up new concepts.

There are people that are pretty awful at sculling that have been doing it for years and I ended up learning and within a month won a race.
