"Instead of lambasting his child for not giving proper credence to the institutional process that has been in place since 1892, Whiteley asks a key question. Why has our education system stayed the same while our economy has so drastically shifted due to changes in technology? After giving a brief history lesson about Horace Mann, The Committee of 10, and the influence of the Industrial Revolution, he begins to explore alternative ways of schooling, specifically the model developed by Larry Rosenstock at High Tech High in San Diego, Calif."

I took a MOOC run by Larry Rosenstock last year called New School Creation.

High Tech High has an interesting model. This clip shows how it works: https://vimeo.com/117016381 -- no grades, just presentations of learning. Students interview potential teacher hires, etc.

That's the kind of education I think parents need to learn about. It's so much better in so many ways. And it actually leads to life-relevant skills.

The film has a lot of potential in exposing the darker sides of school, testing, and perhaps even the other junk that goes on behind the scenes. I think we should follow the developments, and if an opportunity comes, to cooperate with the film-makers.

So the whole point of highschool is studying so you can go to college. :| Why not go straight to college then? Not much happening in high school.

Good point, that's how I felt, too. Some people get something out of high school, but a lot of us don't.

The truth is, you can go to college without high school. Most colleges accept those who homeschool or use other "opt out of school" means. You mostly have to learn things and show that you're an interesting person, who will be a good fit for a given college. And, for community college and other non-selective colleges, you really don't need high school.

You might need to learn things, like some standard school content, but there are lots of ways to do that.

He's a former teacher who realized how miserable a lot of students were, and he started a program to help teens quit school and start living their life. It might sound scary to parents, but this is an established model. Lisa and I talked to Ken today... it was interesting.

College isn't for everyone, either. There's a documentary about that, Ivory Tower.

Still, some colleges do allow a lot of flexibility, but many don't.

I think the key is figuring out who who are, and what you want to learn, and what you need to learn for life and some kinds of work. And that's much better done with people who get to know who you are, rather than forcing things on you... which is what the online program Lisa and I are launching, Catalyst Learning Network, is all about, like Ken's program.

Yep. School doesn't teach us to do things, it teaches us to pass tests. Glad more teachers realize this now.

One of my teachers showed a different trailer for this movie and (I think) missed the point almost entirely.

That clip really bugs me, because that teacher is trying to FORCE students to take initiative in a very specific way, without stating why -- and then getting mad when they don't comply.

How the hell can one be independent, innovative and conform at the same time? Boy, this manipulation system is getting out of hand. (As if it wasn't already)

I think what was described in the trailer was something I thought not possible: a double contradiction! You're telling people to be independent by complying with the standards set, and by saying that, you're implying independence requires compliance! What the hell kind of logic is that?
